She had a brilliant career, during which she helped develop drugs to treat many important diseases, including malaria and AIDS. She won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988. Elion and George Herbert Hitchings (an American doctor), discovered new drugs using rational drug design, which utilized differences in biochemistry and metabolism between normal human cells and pathogens.

Against her father's wishes, she decided to dedicate herself to the study of natural sciences. She enrolled in the faculty of chemistry and physics at the University of Cambridge where she graduated and obtained her doctorate with research relating to the colloidal characteristics of coal. She was a chemist and X-ray crystallographer who made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the molecular structure of DNA ,RNA, viruses, carbon and graphite. DNA was initially isolated by the Swiss biochemist Friedrich Miescher, who in 1869 identified a microscopic substance contained in the pus of the surgical bandages used. Since this molecule was located in the nucleus, he called it nuclein. Thanks to photo 51 taken by Raymond Gosling, a specialist who worked under her supervision, Watson and Crick managed to develop the chemical model of the DNA molecule.
