Closeness is universally known as the quality of being only a short distance away. It can be defined as the state of being narrowly enclosed, with there being a small margin between one thing and another. In the book Ratliff describes 'closeness' as the synchronization of two or more musicians, or musical elements. He states that closeness is an element that is developed over time and has value to the ear. An example Ratliff uses is Earl Phillips's song "Where Can You Be" by hooking into his lead musicians and ensured the margin between him and his musicians was small. The rhythms of the song were composed of bass drum, snare, and high-hat. An example from outside of the book that can be used would be King Kunta by Kendrick Lamar. The closeness used here is the collaboration of West Coast and NWA styles, creating closeness.
