I think that by learning how to debate, students will be able to express their thoughts and beliefes in a proper and coherent manner and will learn to anticipate and listen to an oponent's opinion. that is what I feel that our society lacks.
Moreover, I think that learning English through debate will improve students' reading, writing and speaking skills on top of it facilitating social interaction, which is almost absent in zoom lesons.
I have very little knowledge of how to conduct it properly or how to find a good deating topic, I have tried using youtube tutorials but found that it mostly confused me.
my expectations and questions are the same:
HOW DO i DO IT?
HOW DO I FIND A GOOD TOPIC?
IS A TOPIC OR A QUESTION?

I always use the movie the Great Debaters as it also ties in to the Harlem Renaissance poetry that we learn. My expectations for this course are to fine tune my skills as a teacher, in order to simplify the process for the students of creating a clear and logical set of claims. In addition, supps are: 1. How can one implement debate via zoom while we are distance learning. 2. How to enable all the students to take part and not just the strong ones. Any Games or Speaking exercises that scaf
fold the art of public speaking.
I use this wonderful Monty Python sketch to introduce the difference between an argument and contradictions. :)

This year I am preparing my 12th graders for the COBE exam and part of our discussions are very interesting and fascinating, full of different opinions, therefore I would love to be able to conduct discussions as these the best way possible to enable my students to listen, respect, express and respond to one another in the correct manner, these are my expectations from this course. The question I have is how to get them to actually listen to one another and respond to what has been said and not just share another opinion. One inspiring program I saw was on Bat El Papura, she is an Israeli actress/comedian, I find her story amazing, the confidence she has to enable her to reach her goals despite her being different.

I am the English coordinator at Manor Cabri JHS.
This course is a great opportunity for me to learn the truth behind the world of debate. I am looking forward to opening a debate pilot group in my school. My students are used to speak out in front of audiences in Hebrew mainly because they study in PBL programs. I hope that this course will give me teaching ideas and tools which I will later use with my students.
I would like to know what would be the best way to break out the fear behind speaking in English among students. What would help them enhance their self confidence and push them to argue in a polite and confident way.

One speech that I like to show my 9th graders is Simon Sinek's. I think both the topic and his charisma can be a great influence.

Hi, I'm Wendy Weiss Simon. I live in Jerusalem and teach English and Diplomacy at Havat HaNoar HaTzioni. I'm taking this course to add to my "tool box". I don't really have any questions. The last part of this "expectations" padlet was hard. I thought about the clip we saw here and about the speeches we use in diplomacy but then I did like I teach my kids - "Google it!" So I did! And found this under the heading "15 Best Public Speaking Videos... " - I loved it. And have already been thinking of ways to use it in my classes!

I haven't taught debate before, therefore I'm here to learn how to conduct one. Public speaking is not my strong side, so I would like to learn this art of building arguments and defending opinion with confidence. I haven't yet got any specific question, rather I would like to know the basics. My expectations of this course are to get ideas, topics and tools for conducting a classroom debate.

Hi, I am Lina. I am an English teacher from Ramat-Gan. My expectation from this course is to learn how to debate. Only after I know how to do it, can I teach it to my students. One question about debate that I have is; whether the accuracy of the language that is spoken with affects the quality of the debate. I do not know an example of oration, but I have seen the speech of Greta Thunberg. I think it was very dramatic and inspiring.

Since my students are too young to debate in English, my main expectation from this course is to get some tools that could help me bring my pupils to feel freer to speak in English. Most of them are pretty good, but they're shy and afraid of making mistakes in front of their friends. My question about debate would be about how your personality might affect the way you express yourself when you speak in public. As for a clip that I've always found inspirational and would like to share with you, here goes a scene of The Dead Poet Society, a movie in which Robin Williams was magnificent.

My name is Nora, I live in Kfar Kama and I teach English at Kadoorie high school. I think that in order to debate one has to research a topic, relate to different aspects of it and to present a reflection of the topic in the attempt to convince others of one's acquired knowledge. If we apply this in class, students will read about a topic they are interested in or listen to a relevant video clip, summarize main points that are needed in order to build their arguments, and eventually present them in front of their peers. In terms of using language, students will be reading, listening, writing and talking. I would like to learn more about the process so I would be able to help my students become better speakers. I expect to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to do this by the end of the course.

My question is - what is the difference between public speaking and debating?

One of my favorite movie scenes is the recitation of Marianne Williamson's Our Deepest Fear by one of the students in Coach Carter.

I also participate in the Let's Talk program for 7th graders and would love to use some of the tools I gain from this course in my classes, mainly the tools related to fluency, proper pronounciation and confidence in public speaking.
My question is: Since fluency and the ability to use / produce the correct vocabulary (meaning - to find the right words) in the appropriate time are affected by confidence, how can I use debating in class to help my students become "faster" and better "producers"?

I have been an English teacher for 15 years, after working in the incoming tourism industry for 20 years. I chose this video, since no matter what and whom I watch as a motivational inspiration, I always come back to this one. Worrying too much is our students' no 1 reason to avoid public speaking or debating, both in Hebrew and English. The fear of not being "perfect" causes them to avoid public contact. I surely hope to find some tools to

However, when I tried guiding how to speak naturally, or give them the feeling that all is possible... I feel I need some new tools.
The following song scene is taken from a movie that I really liked as a child, and still do. This wonderfull and talented actress/singer Julie Andrews (Maria) is on her way to meet the captain with his 7 children, who had made all other nannies quit. In this scene, I'm sure, any new teacher or a teacher in a new position can understand her fears.
I love music and believe that through songs we can learn alot- pronunciation, vocabulary, intonations and more.

I live in Nazareth. I teach in a middle school in Nazareth (7-9 grades).
First of all, I expect the course to be inspiring, valuable and an eye opener.
Furthermore, as a teacher, I am always looking forward to improving my public speaking skills and thus implementing that in the classroom.
I want my speech/conversation/teaching to be clear , straight to the point , easy to understand and catchy.
I think debating can also encourage my students to think critically - outside the box , to be aware and concious of things that are happening around us. To research and analyze. To speak confidently, be persuasive and develop their own opinion.
So, in debatingmy opinion , I think debating can work on the 4 English skills: reading (researching), listening, writing and speaking.

One question: I would love to know how to achieve all of these things that I have mentioned with my students ?

My name is Yael Golding, I am an English teachr in Amal School Hadera, I teach 10th, 11th and 12 graders 3,4,5 levels. I have come acrsoss debating when one of my classes had an instructor coming into the class and teaching them all about how to be a good debator. Needless to say I was thoroughly impressed with the way it was delivered and even more so by the interest the instructor managed to raise among the students. I knew then that I would lkie to be able to do the same and this is the reason why I wanted to attend this course. I truly believe I will get better tools to deliver to my students as I think speaking is the hardest ability to acquire .
