1) Even in the tile view, you can only see 4 students/people at a time. Under the person icon next to the chat option, you can see a list version but not with images. For kindergarteners, they will be using parent emails, so their names won't even appear. How can we see all the students at the same time? In Zoom, you can view every participant on one screen, but we won't be able to see all our students during the Classroom Chat.
You will not be able to see all the students at the same time when you are talking in any layout in Meet.

2) Both Zoom and Google Chat seem to kind of shut down/freeze if more than one person speaks at a time. Other than muting your entire kindergarten class (a feature not offered in real like, haha) and allowing only one to speak at a time, is there a trick to managing this? We will have to explain it a lot to kindergartners, who can't be seen raising a hand for a turn (see #1 above).
We are recommending that students be muted and video off after hellos and during the teacher's instructions and for recording. This helps the audio performance for places with bad connections and if they want to talk they ask a question in the chat and they unmute once the teacher recognizes them and tells them to unmute. For younger students, you may have to have them type in a code like, 77 which means they have a question.

3) Can you also address if it's possible to link Google Translate to Google meet? Thinking of our ELL students on that one, and they are both Google products so it might be possible?
At this time there is no way to integrate Google Translate into Google Meet.

Norms around Chatting on Google Meet

From Kathy Krakauer: I teach third graders, some of whom are very tech savvy. I am anticipating that everything will go well during our Meet sessions. I also understand that teachers can remove students who are not behaving appropriately (e.g. using the chat feature to chat privately with other students). Although I plan to be explicit about this from the start, I know that it could become a problem and that I can remove students from the meeting, if necessary. My question, though, is this - will parents be notified that students can be removed from a meeting if necessary? Or should I let them know this ahead of time? Thank you!

Grace, when I did a TLI class in the fall, everyone could access jamboard.google.com and sign in with their natick accounts. It's also a free app and the app can do a bit more. We don't have it through Google Play and I don't think that's an option for the district, but I wonder if any changes have been made with the actual site that for some reason it might not be giving people access...if anyone else is trying it, please let me know if you aren't having any luck either and we will certainly try and figure it out. Thanks! Nili

We tried to bring in a padlet to a Google Meet today and it was hard to do. Is it easier to bring a Google Jamboard to a Google Meet. If so, how? I know clicking on the present window, but then what? Click on the tab? Then the others will see it?

Why one meeting link as opposed to multiple?

This question has come up a lot so posting this answer here:

1. It is a RECOMMENDATION to have one. You may have more, though we do not recommend.

Two reasons why we recommend ONE: First is that it will be far easier for you to manage only one code. Right now kids can jump on to meetings even when you are not there. To eliminate the opportunity to do this and create issues, easier to not have multiple meetings opened at once. Google is working on a fix, but again, this will be far easier when you have fewer meetings available. The second reason is that you will not have to be switching meetings all day. You can leave the meeting opened, turn off camera and mic during breaks and start/stop recordings with ease.

We will be going over this in the sessions tomorrow afternoon, so please join if you have additional questions.

It feels like it would be useful for my students to get a chance to talk to each other. I know I really value connecting with people now. But that seems hard to do with so many people in one chat. Are there ways to make small groups of students where they can talk with just a few people? It seems this would allow them to have more space to speak. That chance to chat feels useful right now and it would be more like what we do many days
