How did your first day go? Did it meet your expectations?ıt was very tiring but very productive at the same time. Today's sessions met my expectations greatly. It was a great opportunity for us.We have shared our ideas with eachother and not with the same collegues. We have changed our partners and Simon has managed this period successfully. During this sessions,I have learnt about PDC,I have learnt that I am equal with my collagues,I am not superior than them so I will only try to help them when I go back to my hometown.I will not teach to them.I will be a facilitator and ıt is something different from a teacher or a trainer. It is something like beeing a guide.I had self confidence at the end of the lesson because I've realized that, after this programme,ı will go on keeping in touch with my mentors while arranging my workshop plans for my own PDC meetings. And when we watched a sample PDC meeting, all of us felt as the same. We have said that we could manage this.It was a good thing for me.I had more confident than before at the end of this sessions

How your ideas about teaching young learners change in anyway? İf so how?To answer this question,At first I have to explain my ideas about teaching young learners. Our mentor showed us four different pictures about how children learn and he wanted us to choose one of them which is closer to us as a teacher. I have choosen the second picture. In this picture a sculpture was shaping a sculpture.Because Ihave checked the other pictures,I felt myself as a sculpture who was shaping his/her sts during the lesson. But our mentor Simon said that a teacher mustn’t be like a sculpter. Our sts. had feelings, they were alive. A sculpture had the power and he/she shaped the mud as he wanted. It was a very teacher centered method he said. Then ı have learnt that ıt is the Behaviorist motion. And also the first picture(which the teacher was filling the information to the child’s brain) and the third picture(a gardener was watering the plant) were the wrong style of teaching. But in the fourth picture, the teacher tries to scaffold the child’s learning. As a guide, he/she is trying to support the sts, not to shape his/her, not fill the sts directly or force them to do something.Till now I thought that I was a modern teacher,my lessons were student centered and I was productive and open to the new ideas. But today, when I have choosen this picture,I realized that in fact as unconciosly I forced my sts to do whatever I want. My lessons were infact teacher centered and I had the power during my lessons.I had been shaping my lessons and also students. So with the help of these kinds of workshops and trainining programmes, I hope to develope my teaching skills and teacher centered techniques. Then during the lesson we read some statements about children’s foreign language learning and we discussed them among us.Before the lesson I thought that young learners should be corrected immediately when they made mistakes in English lessons because I was feeling myself as if I was a sculpture and if I didn’t correct them immediately,my masterpiece wouldn’t be flawless. But during this lesson,I realize that I am on a wrong way.the students are not sculptures of me,they are not my masterpieces. They are alive and they can make mistakes, they must make mistakes and also they can learn from their mistakes.

What needs to be adopted most in your coursebooks to help childern improve their oral skills?

In our coursebooks, first of all the content should be from a real life situation. If the students arent familar with the words or the situation, they dont want to speak about it or they cant be motivate or adopt themselves to the context.Coursebooks should include in or teach everyday English in real life situation. And also they should provide the students with the sufficient speaking practice in expressing their personal views or personal likes and dislikes or something like these about themselves.Because they like talking about themselves.( My favourite colour is green and whats your favorite colour). And an oral skill should provide sufficient communicative practice, for example;through role play, pair work or as a group. The speaking activities should be interesting and motivating for students. And the differenciation is the most important part for me. The speaking parts ,or speaking activities must be changeable. We must be able to change or adapt it to our classes easily.

How can PDCs help youwith that issue?
In this lesson I have learnt about a lot of things.I realize that in fact oral lessons can be very enjoyable thanks to the teacher. We can use a lot of drills during the lesson and without drill activities,ıt is impossible to make our sts speak. All of the drills are familiar to me like chain drills or repetation drills, substition drills or back changing(the most ı love) drills. And today I have learnt something important about oral activities that we shouldn't write the dialogue first.During the oral activities,at pre part,I was writing the dialogue to the board to make my students felt more confident. But today our mentor said that it was wrong. But meaning must come first. With gestures, mimics we try to give the meaning at first, then we elecity then we drill individually and then coming boarding part.

Do you think shared reading is a suitable prodecure to use with L2 children?Why/Why not?

As I observe from today's lesson that shared reading provides enjoyable and comfortable experiences with an interesting and colourful book for all students. It provides opportunities to engage in expressive, meaningful reading. The teacher is the reader and students aren't forced to read a lot.(Today I have learnt that young learners shouldn't read aloud during the lesson in front of their friends and we shouldn't make immediate correction. It is wrong!!) In shared reading,at first part teacher engage sts' interests by using some craft works or pictures or a few opening words. It is possible in our classes I think. And the desks in the classroom should be made into circle and the teacher sits with the students and during reading activity,he/she changes his/her place to be near all of them.So they can feel comfortable, they can hear their teacher easily and maybe they can be quite if they are noisy, they pay attention to the story. In Turkey, the classes are a bit crowded (45-50 sts in a class) so we can't circle the sits but we can divide the class into three parts and we can walk around their sits or we can sit near them during the reading aloud and try to show the pictures of the book to all of the sts. And the intonation of the teacher is also very important. It mustn't be at the same tonation.Sometimes he/she stresses some words to take their attention. So it is also possible in our classes. We can give roles or names them from the book and it makes them get involved in the story. For example in today's lesson, our mentor gave a name for all of us,and thanks to it,I listened to the story more carefully to catch my name.Because when we heard our names,we had to show our craft fish.So I was awake. It is an important way to keep the students alive. And during the reading, our Mentor guided conversation about the meaning and language of the text, and invited sts to share their thoughts(what will be next? What do you think? how do you feel about it? etc..) But when we watched a demo about shared reading(example of a Korean teacher's lesson) I have seen that we can use mother tongue sometimes if it is necessary to be more clear.Because during the lesson in some parts, when she notices the students are confused and don't understand, she explains the meaning in mother tongue to make them clear. So shared reading can be an enjoyable experience for our classroom community, especially for young learners and important opportunity for children to 'step up together' into more challenging texts.

Of course I agree. But I think not only the Primary school Teachers but also All of the teachers are facing with this challenging. The Balance may be the key word. To manage the children We should be equal and provide a balancy environment for them. Also We shouldprovide a happy and courages environment but by using some rules and routines and responsiblities. We try to create a peaceful class. But how? As a teacher We should determine the Classroom rules with the sts altogether as soon as you meet the new class. We let them to determine some of the rules and We should ask about their expectations from the lesson and the teacher. I mean We should Show them that they are important for us also their feelings and thoughts.and as a Teacher we should have some routines to make them know what will happen next. The other point is the sts are generally so clever that they will try to know you for a few week and during this time, they will check you and try to force you sometimes to see your limits. These a few first weeks are so important for our class management.Because if We do something wrong, they may not respect us or like us for a long time. It can set a thick wall between us and ıt can be very hard to break down this wall for a long time. The first impression and the first few weeks have a big importance. We should be patient and avoid some favourite sts. ( even if We have some, they shouldnt know about it) We should respect to our sts if We want them to respect us.We should encourage them and as a Classroom rule, at the beginning of the lesson We should forgive the humiliation.ıt must be the first rule of our Classroom. The respect.I always tell my sts that you are equal and We are here to enjoy the lesson and have some fun. We can do mistakes no matter but We have to be respectful to eachother.ıt encourages them. I will go on with the second question. I am at the bus now.

What challenges do the teachers face?

I think being clear is the important part. At the first lesson, the Teacher should convey his/her expectations for the sts clearly. They should have some rulesbut they have to determine the rules alltogether. The Teacher asks them to find some rules so they feel themselves important and valuable. Without rules, there will be no peace. There will be a lot of noise. And being consistent with rules is an other important point. Because ıf they notice that you let one of the st. to do something wrong but not another, they will think that you are unfair and they will not trust you and it will cause a thick wall again between you and them. You should be consisted and equal to all of them. And one of the most important aspect is as a Teacher, you should solve the problem with the sts by yourself. You shouldn’t send the sts to the discipline or to the principal or something like that. You should Find a solution on your own for the problem between you and them. Because ıt can be shown as you are not incapable of effectively managing your Classroom. And it shows you weak on their eyes. And also the relationship is very important. If the sts love us, they will trust us and they will listen to us. It is the most effective way for the Teacher. When I was a child, I was listening the lesson if ı loved the Teacher. But if ı didn’t love the Teacher, I wasn’t listening to the Teacher. So a Teacher should take care of the sts, she should ask their feelings, know their names. The Teachers should make the sts feel important. Communication is very important. We should be aware of that they are human.

Are there any tips or techniques from the sessions today that you could use to manage your PDCs positevly?

In today's sessions we have learnt many tips or techniques that I haven't met before. But I like the sleeping pandas the most.I thought that I could use it during my classes and also for my PDCs. We have met an other game today,ıt was a bit similar to sleeping pandas. In this game our mentor shared us to groups of two.One of us was the writer and the other one was the speaker. There were some sentences written on the wall outside. The speaker went out, read the sentences we were responsible for and tried to keep the sentences on his/her mind and told the writer. The writers duty was only wait and write whatever he/she heard from the speaker. So,in this game the spekers were so active and they had a difficult duty but the writers were relax.(I was the writer :) but ı felt sorry about my speaker friend) So I thought that It was not fair.I may not use this technique in my PDCs like this but maybe I can change. After I shared the groups,I want them go and read the sentences and keep in their minds and write together as a group.I don't seperate them as writer and speaker . For example,In sleeping panda, also there was a duty of keeping in their minds but all of the group members try to keep in their minds the same sentence. Then they came together and combined their power of memory :) and tried to remember the whole sentences with the help of eachother. If one of them forgot about a word, the other remembered this part and completed the lack part.It was a good group work I think. And at the end,the writer student wrote the whole sentence to the board. Then we began to discuss about the sentences. It was more equal and cooperative so I can use it for my PDCs.

Are there any other elements of classroom management in your PDCs that you will have to think about (managing feedback for example)

We have learnt a lot of things about classroom management so I think there is nothing to add but we can review some of the important parts. We should have some rules and we should treat equally to all of the sts to make them trust us.We sould determine the classroom rules with the sts to nagiote them. They can feel precios about themselves. The teacher should get to know each sts as an individual.He/she should be patient and solve the problems individully by himself. If there is a problem student,he shouldn't send it to the principal or discipline department of the school. And as teachers we should express our expectations clearly at the first lesson. We should be kind.If they love and trust us,they will love our lesson,so classroom management will be easier. And for the last, we should know that all of the problems have a reason so classroom management is not only make the sts silent to provide a quality environment for the lesson but also find the reasons of these problems and try to find a solution to disappear them.If they love and trust us everything will be easier in the classroom.

Has your view of assessment changed? How?

It has changed a lot. I graduated from English language and literature department in 2004. So most of my lessons were about the literature. We read poems, novels made comments, wrote long essays, etc. We learnt about the teaching techniques and assesments maybe only for one term. We learnt them shortly in a short time. Then I became a Teacher of English, and I like my profession so much and I try to do my best while teaching but I am not familiar with some of them and I don’t know the names or types of them.So this in-service training has gained me lots of things. For example: I have seen that assessments have some types as self-assessment, formal and informal assessment and peer assessment. I have already applied them during classes but ı havent known the names of them 🤦🏼‍♀️🫠
And I am happy to have some guidelines for developing child friendly tests for children. For my sts always I try to prepare child friendly tests but with a help of a guide ıt will be better 🥰👍🏻

And the second question is about the monkeys on the tree 😬

Yesterday, I was feeling as if I am about to fall down of the tree. Because ı was aware of the importace of the assessments but I was feeling that something was wrong about it during our classes. We analized a simple test yesterday from the reality and then We had chance to criticise and adapt it a child friendly tests by using our guides. They were very different from eachother. So ı thought that ‘poor students’ 🤦🏼‍♀️ In Turkey generally when We say assessments, the classical tests come to our minds.I am aware of that these kind of classical tests are not appropriate for young learners, but I dont know how I can adapt them to a child friendly test. After learning about the criterias and have seen some examples of child friendly tests, I can say that I feel a bit more comfortable about the assessments. Maybe I can be the monkey sitting in the middle of the tree🤷🏼‍♀️ Happier, more comfortable, but still have to learn much more, that isnt enough ☺️

1) The aim of these PDCs is to introduce new Classroom practices and create Classrooms in which sts feel comfortable speaking English and actively involved in the learning process. As I understand from this project that We try to change the teachers aspects positively, try to change some of them’s perspectives and try to give chance to share some experiences and have opportunities to speak English. In Malatya I am the group leader of the Primary Teachers of English ( If Simon reads this part, He says “oh , poor teachers “ as I feel 😬) And so We have routine meetings which I am conducting them. We talk about our problems and try to share about our experiences but We never try to Find a solution to these problems. But these PDCs will be very different from this kind of meetings.ın our PDCs We try to work together, refresh our old and dusty techniques and exchange something. We will think, pair and share. We will come together, reflect on their teaching practices, discuss their common problems and seek solution together.the project aims to Maximise the use of English inside and outside the Classroom. The project will benefit not only for the Teachers but also their students.

2) Attending in a real PDC is very helpful for me.I don’t think that I will have a big problem in my PDC in my local area but the biggest problem can be the unwillingness participant. They wont want to participate or join the activity. We should organize the plan in a good way that you dont let them to get bored. And our mentors are so helpful and professional that I can ask them whatever I want. Now I think that everything is so clear.I am very eager to go back to my local area, and share my experiences with them. And also I am going to contact with my classmates and collegues. It is a big advantage for us. We have some groups to share everything We have a good relationship with our Classmates. I hope to have a positive feedback from this project 🙏🏻🙏🏻
