As part of a unit that revolves around careers I would have the students who may be struggling deciding what they want to do in life take this aptitude test to find out some careers that may fit their personality. It would be used for generating ideas for them to do a research unit where they have to learn about a career that they could pursue in their future. The students would learn about their chosen career and find benefits and disadvantages of that career. They will create a brochure that they will publish on the class website so their peers can learn about that career as well. At the end of the unit the students will gather together and do a career fair where they present their findings and discuss whether or not researching solidified their desire to take on that career or caused them to consider something different.

Constructivism in the Classroom (English)

When I am talking to individuals about their dislike for English, the most common response that I receive is that they dislike all of the writing that they have to do. While writing is a large part of my curriculum as an English teacher, I can also change the form that my students present their work in. In today's world I see how much students text; for example, my niece once texted close to 1000 texts in one day. ONE DAY. Yet often times she comes to me for help in her English class because she says that the writing is overwhelming. There is a disconnect between what we are doing in English and what students are doing in their everyday lives. Through the use of technology in the classroom we have the ability to reach into those domains of social media and collaboration tools. I think of the teachers that use a class Facebook page where the students can post things relevant to English for fun. This can be a powerful tool to show students that English is not only writing essays but communication in its truest form.

During a unit that revolves around the novel Anthem written by Ayn Rand, students will ponder and answer the question: What does it mean to be an individual? Students would then be introduced to multiple sources of information to show them the complexity of individualism and collectivism. They would have to come to their own conclusion and create a podcast where they explain the conclusion that they have come to and how that impacted them in some way.

This would be a great way to help students discover books. My favorite thing to do, when school is out, is go through amazon and find a new novel to download to my kindle. I have found my favorite genres by reading a lot of different books, which some of my students may not have achieved the level of background knowledge that would give them a specific genre. In order to help students understand this process I will show some examples of books on the board. I will then show the students how I go about choosing my next book to read. I will show them how I look at the cover first, usually looking for something that catches my eye. After that stage I look to the synopsis and find out if this book has the elements that I want. If the book has those elements then I pick it up and read the first few chapters. If I like the book I continue reading, if not I return the book to the library (my students wouldn't have a kindle). Instead of requiring the students to read the entire novel, I would have them do as I have done, and make a prediction of how they feel the book will go, clarify who the main characters are, make decisions on whether or not they like the characters or premises of the novel, then summarize what they have read and if their predictions on the book were correct. My hope is that they will actually get involved in the book and continue reading it because they chose the book off of their own interests. However, I will only want info on the first few chapters as to avoid making reading the book more of an assignment than something enjoyable to them.

I have actually done multiple different lesson plans on this form of learning and have included one of my favorite lesson plans to the left of this bo. In this lesson the students are given different forms of diction and asked to define that diction form and write elements of that form to present to the class. The students will have the opportunity to work in expert groups then bring that knowledge to their own groups. We will solidify their knowledge as a class at the end of the lesson to clear up any misconceptions.

I will have students create a list of problems that they currently face at school. At this point I will compile all three of my English 11 classes thoughts and reorganize and condense the points down into a more manageable number. Students will then choose one of these issues and become more versed in that issue through group collaboration with their peers in my other English 11 classes. For example, if one issue was bullying, all of the students from my English 11 classes that chose that would work through Google Drive and compile all the information. They would have a discussion through Today's meet about the material then they would take the consensus of information reached by all three classes and present it as a group in their own class. Each class group would present their information to their own class so there would be three different presentations. This allows students to get more information and opinions before presenting the information.
