These conventions must include things that will make the reader want to read the magazine and make it stand out to them. However, there are basic front cover conventions that must be included such as:

·         Large, memorable masthead
·         Image of featured artist on the cover
·         Engaging colour scheme 
·         Taglines
·         Headline with straplines
·         Pull quotes 
·         Barcode and date/issue number

Most of these covers included a bold masthead which was usually the largest text on the page. This is why I chose to place the masthead on my cover vertically down the page. The size of the masthead is the largest on the page and is in a pink colour to match the colour scheme. It is important that the masthead is large and stands out as it is the magazines identity. I included all of the conventions as mentioned above in order to create an effective looking cover. The main image on the front of the cover shows the featured artist. She is looking directly at the camera with a small smile on her face. This makes her look approachable and somewhat humanizes her as usually famous people are seen as completely different to ‘normal’ people. She is also wearing quite casual clothing as it represents her as being a relatable person and somebody who is ‘down to earth’. This differs from the images and goes against the usual image conventions that I saw in other music magazines as most of the artists were dressed in extravagant clothing and dramatic makeup. I think that it is a good this that I went against the conventions slightly as it allows the audience to relate with the artist and may make them want to read on.

I included a title labelled ‘contents’ so the reader knew what page they were looking at. I made sure the colour of the title was purple as the magazine is called ‘Purple’ so I felt that I should integrate the colour in somewhere. The page numbers all varied in size with the largest numbers being the most recommended/high profile articles. The text also varied in size for the same reason. The text included the colours purple, grey and black to make it look more attractive to the reader. To do this, I wrote the majority of the text in the font ‘Arial’ as it is simple to read. I added a pull quote (in the font October Twilight) in between the middle of the text as this is a feature that is seen quite a lot in other DPS’s I looked at for guidance. The artists name is written is large font, the colour being pink to match with the whole colour scheme of pink and navy blue. The artist name also has a drop shadow behind it to make it stand out against the image. Underneath the headline is a strapline which gives the reader an insight into what the whole interview involves/includes. The image shows the artist looking directly at the camera which gives the effect that she is looking directly at the reader.
