Rank Like You've Never Ranked Before! by Mr Hutchinson

There are 15 poems in the Conflict Anthology. Rank them from best to worst, or worst to best (based purely on how you feel about them), with a single sentence comment for each. Stick your name at the top of your entry. Once you're done, you're free to go and lick the face of the afternoon.

1.The destruction of Sennacherib

- I really enjoy the way he has described the battle once it has finished. It gives it a tone of futility and also the despair many may have felt.

2. War Photographer

- I think it shows that not everything in the world is bad, and that people only want to see what we don’t want to see.

3. Catrin

- The Juxtaposition between the love and conflict between two people is very realistic, and I like the metaphor of the glass tank.

4. The Man He Killed

- I enjoy the ideas of this poem, and how war is pretty stupid, and the people fighting are only doing so to the obedience of their leaders.

5. Extract from the prelude

- It’s alright I guess. A bit exaggerated, and overly romantic towards that boat.

6. Cousin Kate

- Could’ve been written in a denser format, but it’s not that bad.

7. A poison Tree

- I like the rhyme scheme and the extended metaphor of the tree blossoming from his tears, but it’s a bit perplexing to me without further context.

8. Half Caste

- I like the style in which it has been written, but I don’t fully get the meaning of it.

9. Exposure

- Long and boring.

10. The charge of the light brigade

- Longer and Boringer.

1- Belfast Confetti - I really liked this poem because of how it was different to the other poems. I liked especially how it was structured and how it was very much from his point of view.

2- Halfe - Caste . I enjoyed this poem because of the different use of language and the consistent repetition and how I was engaging.

3- A Poison Tree . I liked this one because I enjoyed the rhyming and the weird simpleness of it.

4- The Man He Killed . I thought this poem was good and a bit strange, due to the fact that I felt like each line ether dragged on or was to short but I think that was due to the enjambement.

5- The Destruction of Sennacherib . I liked this one because of the very descriptive interesting language how ever It was a little bit long and slightly confusing.

6- Cousin Kate . I thought this poem was ok, I found it a little bit boring however I didn’t think it was bad.

7- Catrin - I thought this poem was good but not amazing.

8- Extract from The Prelude . I thought this poem was ok, in some ways it was a little bit to condensed and didn’t flow very well so I got a little bit lost in it but that made it a bit interesting. I also liked the end description.

9- The Charge of the Light Brigade . I thought this one was again ok, a bit boring however I liked the development of the poem.

1) 'Half-caste'
This poem I relate to since I am also mixed and the whole thing around not being enough of one race too white, not white enough too black, not black enough. Always too much or not enough.

2) 'Exposure'
I was a little confused with this one but i think because of the last line "is it that we are dying" a soldier had high hopes and expectations fro suvival and they failed him and that's it gone dead, nothing.

3) 'The Man He Killed'
This poem from what i can tell is about war you kill a person who if you met in the street or at a pub or bar it would go differently. On the battlefield who you are doesn't matter how many you kill does.

4) 'A Poison Tree'
I liked the idea behind it, how forgiveness betters us and if you don't forgive you (metaphorically speaking) grow a tree filled with your own poison that can benefit nobody. It makes you think about what holding a gruge can cause. It also shows that forgiving someone you've never been fond of is much harder than a close friend who messed up because one you try with because you subconciously want to however with a enemy not so much (depending on how serious the mess up was).
