It is about the time of the sun setting and the lights coming on. The women's voices scatter through the air to show a mood regarding how it feels to be a woman and how they are never really alone or have privacy. Some body is always listening.

"Play!"
"In the morning,
In the evening,
Ain't we got fun----" (Fitzgerald, p.95)
Ev'ry morning, ev'ry evening
Ain't we got fun?
Not much money, Oh, but honey
Ain't we got fun?
The rent's unpaid dear
We haven't a bus
But smiles were made dear
For people like us

This song is played at one of Gatsby's parties and it's showing that all the parties are fun and full of life. The night is still young and so are the people. Everyone is having a load of fun and no one is going to sleep anytime. Everything was awake at this our, including the trains and thunder. This song can also me ironic and mocking because they are all having fun and not caring but they do not al have money to be able to do this.

"Young and Beautiful" by Lana Del Rey - 2013

Will you still love me
When I'm no longer young and beautiful?
Will you still love me
When I've got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will
I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?

This song is about a woman reflecting on you past, present, and future life with the relation of her lover. She is hoping that she will be with her lover and that we will still lover her, even in their old age. She reassures herself within the song that he will not leave. This songs fits in correlation to the song "The Sheik of Araby". They both talk about how the women long their lovers and that they depend on them and are never alone. It was important for women to feel like they were loved and not alone so these songs describe their emotions and feelings pretty well.

You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet
Only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance
You can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl
Watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen

This song is about and young girl who has no worries in her life. She is able to just dance and party to her heart's desire. The party never stops with her and everyone around her is having loads of fun. This correlates with the song "Ain't We Got Fun?" because both songs are talking about an endless party that everyone is enjoying and there is not a care in any of them. They are all just living in the moment until the sun comes up.

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody" by Whitney Houston - 1987

Clock strikes upon the hour
And the sun begins to fade
Still enough time to figure out
How to chase my blues away
Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me

I've been in love and lost my senses
Spinning through the town
Sooner or later, the fever ends
And I wind up feeling down
I need a man who'll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last

This song has a very upbeat sound which can have a misleading meaning. People think it is a happy song, but there is a deeper meaning to it than just what is on the surface. The video is shown in black and white with blurbs of color to show that she escapes her sorrow. She becomes playful and energetic and leaves things behind. This correlates to the song "Three O'Clock in the Morning" because they are both talking about the girl leaving and being sad, but they find something else. They are stuck in the loneliness of their lives until they can find something to help them and make them happy again.

Introduction to music in The Great Gatsby

Music is always and important aspect in everything it is in. The Great Gatsby is a novel where music is contributing to the mood and how the characters are acting in the story. They all have their own ways of acting and they are portrayed. Music is the way of expression when people do not know how to say what they are feeling on their own. It gives an insight to what they truly feel inside. Music is very powerful in most cases because it appeals to the characters on a deeper level.
