People that were considered "colored" or African American had no voice at the time and were seen as the lowest of the lowest, they were always told of what they possibly can and can't do by the white men. The songwriter/producer concludes "When I'm runnin'/I don't want no free ride/I'm just sick and tired of runnin'/Some nights I want to cry/Cause I can see the day comin'/Together we'll fight/Oh, but more runnin'"(2016, P.Williams).African Americans were treated very poorly with no respect and the person here is trying to find some sort of way out to be free from all of society but he/she can't b/c everywhere he/she goes they are always going to be treated unfairly and will never find some sort of freedom so they keep runin', In the book of Huckleberry Finn there is this one scene in chapter 42 with Tom Sawyer and he states "...hain't no right to shut him up! He ain't no slave; he's as free as any creature that walks this earth". People back then had the decency to think that just because your skin color is different you were considered to be the outcasts, lowest of lowest and the "creatures" of society. There were a lot of wrong things we did as a Nation that we struggle to fix with today.

producer/singer: STEVIE WONDER
Lyrics: A boy is born in hard time Mississippi
Surrounded by four walls that ain't so pretty
His parents give him love and affection
To keep him strong movin' in the right direction
Living just enough, just enough for the city

His father works some days for fourteen hours
And you can bet he barely makes a dollar
His mother goes to scrub the floors for many
And you'd best believe she hardly gets a penny
Living just enough, just enough for the city

His sister's black but she is sure not pretty
Her skirt is short but, Lord, her legs are sturdy
To walk to school she's got to get up early
Her clothes are old but never are they dirty
Living just enough, just enough for the city

Her brother's smart, he's got more sense than many
His patience's long but soon he won't have any
To find a job is like a haystack needle
'Cause where he lives they don't use colored people
Living just enough, just enough for the city

Living just enough for the city
Living just enough for the city
Living just enough for the city

His hair is long, his feet are hard and gritty
He spends his life walkin' the streets of New York city
He's almost dead from breathin' in air pollution
He tried to vote but to him there's no solution
Living just enough, just enough for the city

I hope you hear inside my voice of sorrow
And that it motivates you to make a better tomorrow
This place is crelu no where could be much colder
If we don't change the world will soon be over
Living just enough, stop giving just enough for the city

Why?/Overview: Mr. Wonder is talking about how life was back then for African Americans. A mother would work all day and barely make a penny for their children, most African American children were bright and were motivated to learn but did not get the chance because the were "different". Racism is the doing or practice of discrimination against someone due to their religion or race. Everyone was also made equal not one generation is considered to be higher than the other. In Mr. Wonders song he states "I hope you hear inside my voice of sorrow. And that it motivates you to make a better tomorrow. This place is cruel no where could be much colder". At the time many African American families were struggling and had no voice to fight against what wasn't right. Sometimes there would be threats to kill them if they were to do simple things such as voting for the new president. There is also a similar situation to in the book Huckleberry Finn, when Pap stated in chapter 6 "...I was just about to go and vote myself, but when they told me they'd let that nigger vote, I drawled out" Pap here is basically saying that he wants no part in voting if your going to let the African American vote. We were all made equal, but no one saw it during the time era, the "colored" were people too but were just looked at as pieces of property. Mr. Wonder tried to convey a message that something must be done in order to stop things like this and segregation and he made a positive impact by trying to be a voice for the African-American society.
