Gender roles have often been assigned based on sex and morphology. However, the words "man" and "woman" are descriptors of gender rather than sex. The concept of gender is much more varied than commonly thought; in some cultures there is a third or even fourth gender. Gender is historically ever-changing and has never been a biologically determined characteristic. Despite this, the violence perpetuated against those who are trans continues to do harm. Gender is also not something that you "are" but rather something you preform based on cultural norms and assumptions. Sex becomes gender through these cultural norms, which include gender indicators such as clothes or names. Gender serves as an organizational tool that assigns people into roles for the supposed function of society.

The "assignment" of gender is not a victimless action. Although the progress made by feminism and trans-liberation is undeniable, the amount of conservative, homophobic, transphobic, and misogynistic pushback is apparent. I cannot emphasize enough how important advocacy is under this administration, which continues to rip more and more of our autonomy as women and as a people away. In a time when it is common to hear ridiculing of the history of the women's movement and the ridiculing of trans lives, how do we move forward? In order to continue, we must make our voices as amplified as possible and continue to challenge the assumptions made based on restrictive gender roles. We must challenge our peers to think critically, to think beyond the gender binaries, and to analyze what truly is under attack under this administration, which is, as a whole, human rights.
