Based on the author’s own experiences, a young boy with a stutter describes how it affects his everyday life. Although there are always sounds all around him, the sounds and words get stuck in the back of his throat when he tries to speak. The boy’s teacher tells the class that they each have to do a presentation about their favourite place. After a particular hard ‘speech day’ for the boy at school, his father takes him to the river. At the river the boy feels calmer and is able to take his mind off of his stutter. The boy’s father compares the way that the river moves to his son’s stutter. Later in the day, it is the boy’s turn to give his presentation at school, he chooses to speak about the river.

The Memory Tree, By Britta Teckentrup is a lovely picture book to help children celebrate the memories shared with their dies. It is about the aftermath of Fox dying and his friends coming together to remember and share the good times that they had together. While they are reminiscing a little plant begins to grow in the spot where the fox died. Over time it grows into the tallest tree in the forest and one that provides shelter to all the animals.

The weather is personified, describing itself in a friendly way, perfectly pitched at the child aged 3 and above. Plus there are lots of interesting words to discuss, like ‘gusting’, ‘crackling’ and ‘clammy’.

Bethan Woollvin’s vibrant illustrations are full of energy, and packed with details to spot, such as animals and birds interacting in the scene. The final spread has a summary of the weather discussed, which leaves the reader with a sense of excitement for whatever the day will bring. This makes STEM learning super-fun – useful in nurseries and Reception classes alike.

Fortunately, former physics teacher Hiba Noor Khan is here to explain crazy physics concepts from states of matter to friction, pressure and gravity as well as dark matter, space time, refraction and lots more. Featuring lovely, modern and inclusive high colour illustration from Harry Woodgate, How To Spaghettify Your Dog is a good introduction to physics, using relatable examples and humour throughout.

Even though this is a picture book, the concepts and some of the language in the book means that older primary children would still get a lot from it – indeed, it might be too advanced for children who would usually pick up a picture book for fun. There’s a good focus on space, and the book contains a lot of practical do-at-home experiments that don’t require complicated or expensive materials.

In addition, there are four flaps to lift on each page, which reveal fun facts about certain animals, for example, wolves howl to communicate with each other, flamingos hide their heads while they sleep and emus cannot fly but can run very fast.

Crisp, stylised illustrations make it easy for children to identify each creature and the large format, chunky pages, sturdy flaps and rounded corners make this board book ideal for small hands to grasp. It is robust enough to tolerate some rough handling as enthusiastic young readers explore the pages.

Author Chelsea Clinton and illustrator Alexandra Boiger previously collaborated on a She Persisted book about American women, but Around the World expands their scope to highlight global game changers.

And while there have been plenty of titles in the "herstory" genre recently, this picture book is a welcome addition with glorious illustrations from Boiger alongside fascinating, simply told stories and motivational quotes from the women themselves.

Author Chelsea Clinton and illustrator Alexandra Boiger previously collaborated on a She Persisted book about American women, but Around the World expands their scope to highlight global game changers.

And while there have been plenty of titles in the "herstory" genre recently, this picture book is a welcome addition with glorious illustrations from Boiger alongside fascinating, simply told stories and motivational quotes from the women themselves.

It's great to see household names alongside people that children (and adults) might not have heard about before, so that J K Rowling rubs shoulders with Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and Marie Curie is featured in the same pages as Brazilian footballer Sisleide 'Sissi' Lima do Amor.

This gives children ownership and develops a love of reading.

The compendium of all things musical includes sections on individual instruments of the orchestra, a diversity of notable composers and famous pieces of music and finally a section about musicology including modern music and music technology. The tone of the text conveys clear passion for the subject matter and the author is quick to point out how music is all around us in both nature and culture. David Doran’s stylish artwork makes you almost want to reach in and try out the instruments for yourself and despite our recommendation, we take no responsibility for children pestering parents to organise clarinet or double bass lessons after being exposed to this book (perhaps the cover should come with a warning!).

Through text, illustrations and diagrams, the book contains scores of information about different aspects of music and is a real must-have to support your music curriculum in school as well as to offer as an enjoyable non-fiction read for pleasure.

This is a remarkable book because it has the scope to be used as the basis for so much different work in schools. The story alone is unusual, the illustrations show notable use of colour and shade. The topic of the book could be used in music or Geography, or recycling topics. I’d never heard of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay before, but this book has made me glad to learn that such a wonderful organisation exists.

The author’s previous book The Shark Caller was a real favourite here at BooksForTopics HQ and also among our community of teachers and librarians. The Song Walker is a new standalone adventure that shares a similar intensity of setting and an interweaving of gentle existentialist musings with relatable themes of making friendships and searching for identity in the face of cultural and familial expectations.

This time, the setting is the Australian Outback and the reader feels the blazing heat and dryness of the red, flat landscape that spans underneath a limitless sky. The main character, who is nameless at the start of the story, appears to have no idea how she got there or who she is. She carries a mysterious case and finds herself on a search for answers accompanied by her new friend, Tarni. Journeying deeper into the desert landscape, the girl has to dig deep into her inner self to find answers about who she is and who she wants to be. 

Tarni’s character adds real depth to the story. She is a First Country Australian girl from the traditional Alaywarre community. Tarni navigates the Outback using a traditional form of mapping – not with paper maps or satellite technology but with songlines, with which routes are passed from generation to generation by repeating the words of a song. The differences and similarities between the two girls become increasingly celebrated as the story progresses, showing how a bond between people from different cultural heritages and lifestyles can be mutually enriching. 

The story is philosophical and at times dream-like, with a melodic quality to the writing. The book is perfect for mature readers in upper kS2 who enjoy an immersive reading experience and a thought-provoking narrative with the potential to stir some very profound discussion questions.

Levi Pinfold’s haunting illustrations profoundly add to the intrigue and mood of the story.

Why not have some books and a seat in the hallway where children can stop and read (space permitted)

1. Make reading part of daily life. Children copy the adults in their lives so set an example by treating yourself to a quick read when you get a quiet moment. It is worth looking at where the reading material is in your home. Can books be stored – or displayed – in places where your family relaxes? Bedtime is a traditional reading time, but if it doesn’t work for you think about other slots. If you know you will have to wait while a sibling does a class or for an appointment, you could bring something to read.

2. It all counts. So let them read what they enjoy. It doesn’t have to be a novel. It doesn’t have to be fiction. Cereal packets, joke books and Top Trumps all count for beginners. For more advanced readers, consider non-fiction, comics and graphic novels. Books that seem too young can be comforting; conversely, books that seem too old are fine, too. The novelty factor of an e‑reader could jump-start an interest in reading, and teenagers might enjoy story-telling apps too.

3. Integrate interests. A book about football might entice someone who prefers pitches to pages – or a cartoon universe encyclopaedia could tempt a TV fan. Current affairs might appeal, too: First News bills itself as a weekly newspaper for young people. Or there’s Whizz Pop Bang, a magazine for junior scientists. It’s worth researching favourite authors: some offer freebies like exclusive stories and sneak previews to online fans. The Words for Life author interviews are a good place to begin.

4. What a treat. Second-hand book shops are stocked with affordable treats, so bring a new (to your child, anyway) book on holiday. Or buy a magazine on the journey. Subscriptions make easy gifts – and charities with children’s branches often publish a magazine – RNLI, for instance. Other magazines that might be of interest are Phoenix and Aquila.

5. Talk about it. Discussing what you are reading will give you some fascinating insights. Questions like ​“Where did we get to?” and ​“What do you think happens next?” send a message that you care about your child’s opinions. Older children might be interested in what you are reading yourself – treasure these conversations, and follow up anything they recommend. It’s very satisfying to pass on your childhood favourites: even share your own copies – but be ready for some challenging questions about the values of previous generations.

Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.

As global learning company Pearson says, ​“Reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background”.

The UK government’s Education Research Standards Team tells us, ​“Evidence suggests that there is a positive relationship between reading frequency, reading enjoyment and attainment.”

With a variety of writing styles and a mixture of fun facts, riddles, cartoons, experiments and games, each magazine offers a great monthly mix for a specific age and stage of development.

This is great for all ages, you can buy characters such as The Gruffalo, or Charlie and the chocolate factory.

They offer everything from; Thomas the tank, to Marcus Rashford to The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. So something for everyone!

The poems and rhymes follow the loose structure of a child’s day from the rhyme “Up” at the start to “Goodnight” at the end. In between comes rhymes that can accompany all sort of activities such as “On the swings” and feelings, like the rhyme “Happy”. The rhymes are simple and easily recalled but the joy for the child will also be in the illustrations by Polly Dunbar. Pictures of children illustrate each rhyme – my particular favourite is the illustration of the child ‘putting on’ her pyjamas to accompany the rhyme, “Jimmy Jams”.

This is a great book for a parent to share with a very young child and for teachers in the early years to read to their class. Children will quickly know their favourites and in no time will be reading along with the adult.

All of the poems are written by James Carter, who has a unique talent for poetry for the young. Each poem is illustrated by Neal Layton and this will provide additional interest when read aloud or when children are browsing the book independently. The poems have clear and wonderful rhyming patterns and this helps to create their ‘read aloud -ability’. Some poems feature repeated patterns such as the title poem, ‘A Ticket to Kalamazoo’ which has a delightful chorus to join in with and ‘Elephant beat’ has an unforgettable repeated question, ‘Fancy a ride on an elephant?’.

The subjects of the poem range from animals to adventures to new versions of traditional stories: ‘Fuss! Fuss! Fuss! or The Goldilocks Rap’ is a favourite! Minibeasts have a high profile in a few of the poems and despite their critical place in our eco-system are rarely celebrated in poetry and these poems make a useful contribution. This is a joyous collection of poetry that would be perfect to read aloud in those spare moments across the school day or in a poetry feast at the end of the day!

The poems in this book will directly relate to children’s experiences of life and the emotions they will have felt. Some poems tackle more challenging emotions that arise from bullying or sadness and one poem tackles an often unspoken emotion – embarrassment. Some of these poems may need to be introduced sensitively, but the language and range of poetry styles make them accessible to explore as well as providing useful springboards for the discussion of feelings.

Some of the poems lend themselves to being spoken out loud and poems such as ‘Stomp’ and ‘It’s like this’ in the collection almost demand performance. Others are well suited to quiet reflection. The poems are written by a wide and diverse range of poets and this collection makes it a good introduction to some of the great children’s poets of today.

At the back of the book, there are photographs and short biographies of each of the poets. What this makes explicit for children is the diversity of poets as well as their achievements. Many of the poems would work well as models for children’s own poetry writing, with clear patterns that could be followed. For example, the first poem ‘If you could see laughter’ asks us to see laughter as a colour and something we can visualise. Each poem is illustrated in a different style and children could easily identify their favourite illustration. This is a great collection for any classroom.

This book features die-cut pages through which bits of a monster are revealed, helping children control night-time fears of monsters.

Each page features just a few sentences of fairly simple language. It is especially good for teaching colours and descriptions.

Va-t'en, Grand Monstre Vert is written entirely in French but the language is fairly simple as it is aimed at young children.

I would definitely say that this book can be used across all key stages, from EYFS to Y6 as it can be used in different ways: from just pure enjoyment of seeing the monster face appear and disappear to teaching adjective agreements with sentences like 'Grand monstre vert a deux grands yeux jaunes' etc. It is a great book that has always been a favourite of mine! 

The main character is an adult - Michael Rosen himself. Quentin Blake's illustrations sensitively complement an account of grief that is both searingly personal and reassuringly universal.

He constructs a giant metal grandmother, who joyfully seizes his hand, taking him on an amazing journey across oceans, mountains and continents. Finally, on a hilltop, they reach a beautiful house; it's the boy's house, the metal grandmother easing perfectly in the space at its heart.

Beautiful and deceptively simple, this story of a boy and his grandmother hints at his lifelong journey of dealing with loss and celebrating her legacy. The shimmering and mysterious illustrations help lend to this sensitive and haunting tale

16-year-olds who choose to read books for pleasure outside of school are more likely to secure managerial or professional jobs in later life.

• Pick a theme: Select books based on the time of year e.g. Valentine’s Day, sporting events, Chinese New Year, Halloween, Christmas, etc. Encourage themed fancy dress for some added excitement. 

• Let the children decide: Giving young people the opportunity to choose their favourite book for the group to read can boost their confidence and help them get to know one another.

• Get creative: Plan book-related arts and crafts. Draw characters, design book covers, create posters - get children thinking ‘outside the box’ when it comes to books. 

• Make it memorable: Build excitement by issuing tickets or invitations in advance and providing drinks, snacks or even a comfy bean bag or two. 

• Assign buddies: An age difference of 3+ years between children can work well so the older child has the skills to assist the younger. Be sure to identify different student personalities and ability levels to create ideal pairs. 

• Schedule a time: Select a consistent day each week or month for reading buddies to meet for at least 30 minutes. That way buddies can look forward to the next session. 

• Developing a reading area: Create a welcoming space for children to read, choose and talk about books together. Turn a school library, assembly hall or playground (weather permitting!) into a reading haven. 

• Define expectations: Clearly explain what will happen in each session and develop a series of steps for buddies to follow, from introductions to taking turns reading. Write the steps on a board or make cue cards to remind pairs of what’s next. 

• Book bulletin boards: Display pictures of staff with their favourite book or book they are currently reading and encourage children to ask questions about them. 

• Show and tells: Ask different subject teachers to talk about or read their favourite book to the class for five to ten minutes at the start of a lesson.

• Cross-curricular book walls: Create ‘book wall’ displays for each department or subject with suggested books to encourage cross-curricular reading.  

• School book swaps: Ask students and teachers to select one book to lend to another. This will give everyone the opportunity to discover new books and recommend one that excites them. Label each book with names to keep track of who owns which book, and encourage borrowers to talk to owners about their respective book

• Adapt for all ability levels: Older students could read alone and younger students could be read to by their teachers. Pair students who need some extra support with teachers or support staff.

• Involve staff: As already mentioned, children benefit from seeing everyone around them read. Involve all school staff in DEAR for children to see it as a priority. 

• Select books in advance: Have students and staff pick a book in advance, be that from home, the classroom or school library. Make sure everyone has their books on the day so they can immediately read when DEAR begins. 

• Set a time: Schedule 20-30 minutes at the same time each day or week for DEAR, or why not try a one-off session on World Book Day? Encourage children to read for 15-20 minutes and then record what they read. 

• Create a reading log: Have students keep track of their book including the title, author, dates of sessions, number of pages read and short summary in a reading log to bring home. Award children merits if they go above and beyond with their summary. 

• Critically review how you work with parents: Identify what processes currently exist to engage parents and carers in their child’s reading. If there aren’t any, make a list of possible strategies. Establish what you want to achieve by involving them with a clear list of goals.

• Provide practical strategies to support learning at home: Invite parents for information evenings or celebrations and explain clear ways to help with their child’s reading. Create suggested and recommended term and summer reading lists. The World Book Day £1 book selection provides a list of the best children’s books across fiction, nonfiction and poetry each year accessible for free using a £1 national book token. 

• Tailor school communications to encourage positive dialogue about learning: Send texts, emails or termly letters specifically about literacy and reading. Make them personalised for more engagement, for example, celebrating the success of a child or a class. Invite parents and carers to regular ‘reading cafes’ where they join their child in the classroom to read together, and encourage two-way dialogue about how they can be involved at home.

• Offer more sustained and intensive support where needed: Talk openly to parents who are less involved about what they would find helpful to support their child’s reading, communicating carefully to avoid blame or discouragement.
