There have been protest against the TMT project because Native Hawaiians and KAHEA did not want TMT to damage the environment. One way that TMT can affect the environment is limiting the habitat of an endangered species until 2011, called the Wekiu Bug. There has already been a problem with the endangerment of the bug until 2011, due to telescope development, and the Native Hawaiians and KAHEA want to put a stop to these creations before the Wekiu Bug becomes an endangered species once again. One other problem KAHEA has with TMT is that during construction they may pollute the aquifer. TMT say that they have a way to assure that will never happen, but the observatories have history of spilling sewage and chemicals.

Important people against TMT were the Native Hawaiians and KAHEA: The Hawaiian Environmental Alliance . They believed that if the TMT project were to be built on top Mauna Kea, it would not only violate sacred land, but also effect the environment. That is why the Native Hawaiians have protested several times against TMT, which stopped the TMT project from continuing.

Many of Hawaii's current land issues are reflective of its past history. In the case of the Thirty Meter Telescope, there are many sides concerning this issue. This side that I agree on is that TMT should not be built on top Mauna Kea because it is and may be effective towards the environment. For example, In the article, Does the Thirty Meter Telescope Pose Environmental Risks?, states "telescope development has restricted the habitat of the Wekiu bug, contributing to its being listed as a candidate for an endangered species until 2011." This means that Wekiu Bugs only had been endangered because their habitat was damaged during the building of telescopes. This proves that the development of TMT can cause a species to become endangered again. Also stated in that article was "The observatories have a history of accidentally spilling sewage and chemicals including hydraulic fluid and propylene glycol. Past incidents have ranged from small indoor mercury spills that were cleaned up quickly to up to 1,000 gallons of sewage seeping into the ground in 2008." This means that observatories like TMT have cause spills. This proves that even as TMT says that they can never pollute the aquifer below Mauna Kea, they cant be sure that accidents wont occur.
