Mrs. Terry disclosed with me that her team of teachers in the sixth grade only have a handful of students with 504s and one student with an Individualized Education Program. Students with IEPs must fall within one of the thirteen categories of disabilities listed underneath the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Students who qualify for 504 plans could have any disability that affects their ability to learn in a general education classroom.

Currently, I am taking a course that focuses on teaching exceptional students in the classroom. I can see a lot of what I learn in that course within the practices and accommodations that Mrs. Terry makes for her students with special needs. I also appreciated that Mrs. Terry not only mentioned her students with 504s and IEPs as students with special needs, but also those that were performing below-grade level. These students need just as much attention as those that qualify for these special programs. Overall, Mrs. Terry seems to be making a conscious effort to be equitable in her teaching practices to make sure that each student has the opportunity to learn and grow.

On Mrs. Terry's team of students, she has one student who identifies as ELL or English Language Learner, meaning that English is not the student's first language. Mrs. Terry supports this student through several different strategies. She monitors the student closely when it comes to taking tests, completing assignments and their participation in group work. She also uses audio text to offer the student another means for absorbing information. Furthermore, she uses the online tool, Google Translate, to help the student as well. In regards to assessing this student, Mrs. Terry significantly modifies all of the assessments for this student so that they are able to participate and grow while being assessed.

In addition to Mrs. Terry having a student that identifies as English language learner, she also has a student with an Individualized Education Program. To be equitable, Mrs. Terry offers this student preferential seating in her classroom. When it comes to assessing this student, she grants the student extended time so that this individual has the opportunity to participate as much as her other students when it comes to test, quizzes and answering questions in class. This student is also closely monitored to ensure that they are receiving the special care that they need to be successful in this classroom.

Although Mrs. Terry does have a students with 504s and one with an IEP, she has many students who are performing below grade-level that she identifies them as special needs. To support these students who are performing below grade-level, she assigns student leaders to help their peers grow in their areas of deficiency. Furthermore, Mrs. Terry frequently performs oral class readings in order to ensure that students are not falling behind on the material that they need to know. She will sometimes have students volunteer to read aloud in class so that they can practice with their peers. Mrs. Terry also creates group that are differentiated based upon their reading or writing level. For example, when she noticed that more than half of her students were struggling with keeping up with the book that they have been reading, she split the class into two large groups. One group was to read independently, and the other group was to read the book together as a class.
