The majority of staff were very knowledgeable and willing to teach to a high standard. The ED was a very good, fast paced environment for learning. The placement organised their students very well, providing me with an information pack with all the details/contacts I would need whilst on placement. My mentor was very helpful when it came to organising spoke visits, something I had not experienced before.

Getting the chance to get off the ward and spend a day observing surgeries in A and E. Learning some new things, also seeing how things run in recovery. This day was organised by liaison with a practice educator at Luton. Also the fracture clinic placement was very worthwhile, spending time in clinics and the plaster room. Also assisting the orthopaedic practitioner during surgical procedures at the hospital.

I was able to learn new skills and gain knowledge. I was able to improve communication skills.

My last placement was on ward 52. Part of my best experience is having a student learning zone on the ward where students are allowed to work together and share there learning experiences. Also the fact that there lots of people ready to teach you.

My placement at endoscopy was a very positive learning experience. Each shift I was allocated to a nurse and was able to work along side them for most of the day. This enabled me to learn more as they were all very willing to share their knowledge and experience. This is not something I have experienced when on placement on a ward. When on a ward, I have found as a student you are allocated to a bay and you work more with the health care assistants.

To begin with I found that it was difficult to get stuck in as there were around 5 other students who were on their management placement so I felt the focus was on Them rather than me as a second year newbie. I also had great difficulty contacting placement initially, for around two weeks I tried to phone multiple times a day with no success, in the end I had to physically go down to ED to get my shifts.

My best experience was working alongside the senior nurses who were very experienced and knowledgeable.

If students are allowed to actually do more of there clinical skills and not bother about washes and cleaning. I understand its part of the care but we need to do the learning and achieved the skills we have come to gain to help us become better future nurses.

Managing and prioritising my workload as I was able to separate doing my professional duties as a student nurse and doing my book when I had free time as I was able to see what proficience that I wanted to do that week

My best experience is that I learnt so much, and I was given a number of patients to take care of

I think some of the nurses could do with a teaching of understanding how to mentor students as some of them think you are just an extension of their arms.

My best experience while working on surgical ward was being able to take care of patients from all medical backgrounds and not just surgical patients. This gave me the opportunity to learn more and widened my scope of my learning.

Found myself overwhelmed with many tasks to do, not enough staff by asking for help.

Simulation is a good way to prepare for clinical practice as it takes away the pressure when using simulation in comparison to real life.

Learning more about how drastic falls can be on the elderly and the amount of pain they go through after a hip replacement. It was a good Learning experience and there was great support.

The ward was overly hectic with understaffing. Staff often did not have enough time for me to take learning opportunities. On occasion when I did get learning chances, this was valuable and appreciated. But there simply were not enough opportunities. I was also frequently placed in the busiest cohort (Baywatch) bays with very elderly or dementia patients. (I had already spent a long first placement with elderly complex care).
