Families of deaf and hard of hearing students

Being Deaf or hard of hearing means a child has partial or complete hearing loss, which can make it harder to hear speech or sounds around them. Every child’s experience is different because some children are born Deaf, while others lose hearing later in life. Deaf children learn and communicate in many ways. Some use American Sign Language (ASL), some use spoken language with hearing aids or cochlear implants, and others use a mix of both. With early support, family involvement, and access to language, Deaf and hard of hearing children can thrive in school, build friendships, and express themselves fully just like any other child. Families play the biggest role in helping their child grow by learning about communication options, finding community support, and celebrating their child’s unique way of connecting with the world, but as important is the way a teacher supports the kids.
