The lovelorn woman, who only wanted to be known as Lee, said she sold her house to raise money for the boyfriend, whom she said had been detained by Customs Department after he supposedly tried to bring in RM800mil worth of gifts for her.

Lee, who shared her plight at a press conference yesterday, referred to him as her “husband” although they had never gone through any wedding ceremony or even met in person throughout their one-year relationship.

She said she had befriended Kenneth Cheung, an American, on Facebook in October last year.“One day, my husband told me.
that he had been detained by the Malaysian Customs Department after he tried to bring in RM800mil worth of gifts including two mobile phones, jewellery and undergarments for me.
“I transferred a total of RM380,000 in cash as tax payments for the gifts .


She believed her lover was in the custody of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and needed money for his release and to return to his home country.“But I ran out of money, the house I owned was also sold and the money was handed over to the Customs Department agent who claimed to have arrested him,” said lee.


Since then, over 10 payment transactions have been made to several different account numbers beginning in November 6 last year with the last transaction of RM95,000 made about four months ago.Chen said he would try to assist Lee who was made a victim by the Love Scam syndicate.


He said a report was lodged last Friday at the Larkin police station under the Johor Baru South district.“This is a serious matter because the (transaction) figures involved are huge.“I also advise the community including the families of any individual to help their family members who have been duped by such syndicates,” said Chen.

 Dec 10 — A 50-year-old housewife lost RM380,000 in a year after she was lured into a relationship with a person on Facebook who tricked her into paying the sum purportedly to secure his release from the authorities.

The victim, identified only as Mrs Lee, said her Facebook lover who claimed to be an American citizen said he had been detained by the authorities for bringing in RM800 million worth of undeclared goods.



On October 29 this year, Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a written statement posted on the Parliament website said a total of RM410.6 million in losses, with 8,489 cases were recorded nationwide over the last year until August 2019 as a result of cyber scams.

He said that according to police statistics, during that period, 7,833 cases involving non-existent loans were reported to have recorded losses of RM 71.7 million.This included the Macau Scam, Love Scam and non-existent loan offers.

  1. Work with your local public agencies and other organizations (neighborhood-based or community-wide) on solving common problems.
  2. Set up a Neighborhood Watch or a community patrol.
Some examples of situational prevention in effect include installing surveillance equipment in areas that experience a lot of vandalism. Another example includes installing security screens in banks in order to prevent robberies. In a neighborhood that has a drug market, the traffic patterns may be changed.

1. Target Hardening

Making your property harder for an offender to access.
 

  • Upgrading the locks on your doors, windows, sheds and outbuildings
  • Fitting sash jammers to vulnerable doors and windows
  • Using secure passwords to prevent criminals hacking your online accounts





2. Target Removal

Ensuring that a potential target is out of view.
 

  • Not leaving items on view through your windows – i.e. laptops, phones, keys, bags
  • Putting your vehicle in the garage if you have one and not leaving valuables on display
  • Being cautious about what you post online as it may be used to identify or locate you offline.

3.. Reducing the Means

Removing items that may help commit an offence.
 

  • Not leaving tools and ladders in the garden and clearing up any rubble/bricks
  • Keeping wheelie bins out of reach, as they may be a climbing aid or help transport items
  • Making sure that bricks and rubble are cleared up


4.If you own a dog, be a part of your local Dog Walker Watch crime awareness program (sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch), and serve as “extra eyes and ears” for local law enforcement agencies in ongoing crime prevention efforts  .

5. Volunteer too help clean up your community. Call your city offices or local waste management company and schedule a dumpster for the event. Then pick up litter together. Show you care about where you live and each other.

6.Organize to help clean and improve parks in your area. Well-kept play equipment and a clean park can attract enough people to discourage illegal activities. Insist that your local government maintain the parks, immediately repairing vandalism or other damage.



7. Adpot a school. Help students, faculty, and staff promote a sense of community through your involvement in a wide range of programs and activities. Work with the school to establish drug-free, gun-free zones if they don’t already exist.
