The place where you come from depended on how people saw you and treat you. Fitzgerald misses his individuality because in the society he portrays people always wanted to know what was happening in his personal life

Social and private identity are two completely different things because your social identity is reflected to everyone you show your everyday characteristics rather than demonstrating more intimate characteristics like your private identity.

Background-Gatsby grew up in a poor farmer family and this ashamed him and this shame drove his desire to change his destiny. Gatsby worked hard to become the man he is in the novel. East eggers typically come from rich families so they live in wealth their whole lives. East and West eggers don't mix well with each other, as one thinks that are superior to the other. 
Appearance- appearance is a display of wealth so the better the clothes are the more money people seem to think one has. This is illustrated when Gatsby shows all his shirts to Daisy and she begins to cry because they symbolized Gatsby's wealth. Also seen as a status symbol. 
Means of income- Gatsby acquires his money through illegal means compared to east eggers; they inherit money from their parents. East eggers look down upon this kind of method.
