"'Doesn't look like a monster, does he?' 'They rarely do'."

In many cases, people often say that the offender didn't look like they could commit a crime, let alone a murder, but I don't think criminals look a certain way. I chose this quote because it kind of captures that idea: what does a murderer look like?

There was a brutal assault and murder of an 11-year-old boy in a small town. Police run DNA tests from things found at the crime scene, and all evidence points to Terry Maitland, an admired little league coach. The problem is that he has a strong alibi that makes it impossible for him to be the murderer.

No one will ever...love me!'"
- Murakami Haruka

In a way, I feel like I can relate to Murakami Haruka. Growing up a person of color, I always felt uncomfortable. I believed that I needed to hide part of my identity (being Mexican) so that people would respect me. In my case, I think the media had a lot of involvement in making me feel this way.

Hide - This whole manga is revolved around the idea of hiding one's identity. Moritani Misuzu, the main protagonist, prefers to keep to herself, but after meeting Murakami Haruka, she becomes more of a risk-taker. After getting to know Murakami, Moritani makes the difficult decision to step out of her comfort zone to help Murakami step out of hers and stop "hiding."

"I won't let her...keep hiding!"
- Moritani Misuzu

In this scene, Moritani Misuzu and Murakami Haruka are arguing because Murakami is being a hypocrite. Not only did this feel like a striking line, it felt like a striking scene in general. Moritani is generally known as shy and indecisive, so when she stepped up to help Murakami get out of her shell, it was memorable.

Out of all the books I've read this year so far, I'd say Fragtime had one of the most memorable messages. At first, it might seem like your typical romance coming-to-age manga, and it is, but there is also an underlying theme of acceptance for those who feel different/alone.

Because of this, I'd also say that it's the book that has impacted me the most this school year. After reading, I spent a lot of time reflecting on my own insecurities and found similarities between my younger self and Murakami Haruka. As I wrote in one of my posts, I was insecure about being Mexican and tried to hide that part of me, similar to how Murakami tried to hide her real personality.
