I think all these teacher standards are important for learning to take place effectively.

In my opinion, I think one of the most important standards is number 5 in both of them. It is so important that teachers are able to adapt their teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils. This is because everyone is different. You may teach children with SEN, or children with an additional language and it's vital for them all to have an equal opportunity to learn and reach their full potential. This leads on to how important it is for a teacher to have a good understanding of the needs of all pupils.

I found a dress policy for a school called the Grangewood Trust. It starts off with “Teaching is a formal and professional vocation. A staff dress code should reflect this and it is important that staff at Grangewood School project a positive and professional image to pupils, parents and other stakeholders.” It goes on to mention that the dress code of staff and volunteers represents the high expectations of the school. The way staff dress will represent what the school looks like to the community.

Included in the policy, there is a list of what is suitable to wear. This ranges from items of clothing with the school’s logo on, knee length skirts, shorts to the knee, blouses, jumpers, jackets, trousers, etc. It then mentions items of clothing which wouldn’t be suitable. These are; lycra cycling shorts, mini-skirts, camouflage clothing, see-through clothing, clothing with tears and rips, etc.

Staff need to make sure whatever they wear is suitable for the activities for that day.

It also mentions that staff should wear their identity badges at all times. I agree with this as it shows they are part of the school. Most placements I have been to have this rule, and if they don’t have identity badges the staff normally have a uniform to wear.

I think a dress policy is important but most of it is common sense.

I think this depends on what year/age group you teach.

For instance, a younger age group may spot things on your clothing (pictures, rips), but after they mention it once they seem not to care anymore.

However, if you taught an older age group, secondary for example, and wore ripped jeans with a see-through top, they would become distracted, stare, and make comments.

Moving it on to students, it's important they have a uniform. Not only does it represent the school but there is no competition or bullying from other students because of what you're wearing.

Especially to "have an open body language and approachable" and also "be strong communicators and excellent listeners". This is because students won't feel afraid to speak to the teacher about anything bothering them, or how they are feeling, which also leads on to safeguarding the children.

I agree with Libby.
Although it doesn't directly impact the work the children produce, I do think it could be cause for distraction with both students and teachers if they're wearing inappropriate clothes. also, it could cause bullying between student and this will have an impact on students work. However, the same can still be said for uniforms. As they are so expensive and some families can not afford to get fresh new uniforms every term, children may go to school in uniforms that don't fit or are dirty and stained and this can also cause bullying within students.

In my personal opinion I think one of the most important points is number 7. I think that having a safe and accessible working environment is very important. From my personal experience I have seen children that have a very poor quality of life and in some instances school is a place where they get to feel safe and have positive attention and this, in my opinion, is very important to keep that up for the child as much as possible.
sophie.

My idea of a professional teacher is someone who listens. I found you can have two types of teachers. Teachers who are there to teach their subject, and teachers who are there to encourage the children to learn and grow.
I feel teachers should dress in an appropriate manner, and act professional in terms of not getting on to much of a personal level with the children as to still have their respect, but I also feel its about finding that balance as more often pupils respond very well to a teacher who is calmer and attempts more to be on the children's level and understand them.
sophie
