In the novel the river represents life. In life there is a start and a finish, just like a river. Life is a journey, it takes time to complete and has many opportunities to be taken. The river is symbolic to life because it may take time to be able to catch something and see a success. Life takes lots of time to complete and their may be bumps and bruises along the way. The rocks and the river can be shown symbolic to represent those bumps and bruises that may be experienced in life. Still, no matter the circumstance, life goes and and the river doesn't stop flowing. "Eventually all things merge into one river, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's greatest flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs" (Maclean 104). This quote represents life because it shows how in life everything merges into one place and you have to travel through the path.

Dad=Mentor in life

Throughout the story Norman and Paul's dad represents someone in life who is a mentor. Norman's dad helps to keep him focused on what he believes is important (religion and fishing) to try and keep him in the best state of mind possible. Mentors are a huge part in peoples lives and play a significant role in Peter and Normans life, especially as a child. "Even so, in a typical week of our childhood Paul and I probably received as many hours of instruction in fly fishing as we did in all other spiritual matters" (Maclean 2). This shows how much their dad enjoys mentoring them in fishing because he is a pastor and is very passionate about his religion.

Dead Beaver=Something in life that seems to have no meaning but is put to use

In the story Norman finds a dead beaver at the sand bar. The dead beaver represents a something in life that seems to have no meaning but can still be used to benefit a person or someone they know. In the story the dead beaver is used for bate to catch fish. Just like in life, sometimes people have to adapt to the situations they are given and use those situations and events to still keep pushing forward and accomplish their goals with what they are given. "Just after my basket gave an extra large thump there was an enormous splash in the water to the left of where I was casting" (Maclean 88). This shows how even though the beaver scared Norman it was still able to be used for a good purpose.

Relationship between Peter and Norman while fishing=relationship between two modern brothers

In the book the relationship between Peter and Norman is like a typical relationship between the two brothers. In the beginning of the book the brothers talk about not talking about fishing while they are fishing and at one point Paul calls Norman out for not fishing the right way. In my life when I am trying to compete with my brothers we tend to call each other out on our mistakes to try and boost our appearance and self-confidence. This happens many times during the story just like it happens many times between my brothers and I. "Since one of the earliest things brothers try to find out is how different they are from each other, one of the things I remember longest about Paul is the business about his liking to bet" (Maclean 6). This shows how typical brothers tend to find out what is different about them so they can pick on each other and try to be better than one another.

During the story, while the boys are out fishing on the lake, a storm comes and makes it very difficult to fix. The current of the river begins to change and makes it difficult for them to fish. Just like in life, things will come peoples way that will push them down and make them fall. The current flow of someones life will begin to turn but once the storm is over then it's important to get back up from those hard times in life and to remember to push on and to not give up.

Bees= tools in life that aren't always noticed but still useful

The bees represent a tool that was used to fish and was not noticed but turned out to be a useful tool in the end. Like in life, it's important to look at all the options that you are given and to not look over what could be useful to someone. It's when people are in need the most that they look at these tools in life to help them. People have to begin to look on the brighter side of things to use tools and get out of their comfort zones to be able to accomplish what needs to be accomplished. "I took one look at it and it felt perfect" (Maclean 86).

Rod=Important tool to live

In the book both Peter and Norman use fly-fishing rods and find them very important as a way to catch the fish. The rod is like a tool in life that someone can't live without. This tool is used to become closer to your successes and accomplish what needs to be done. Without the rod, or that specific tool, it would be very hard to become successful and become accomplished in life. "Always it was to be called a rod. If someone called it a pole, my father looked at him as a sergeant in the United States Marines would look at a recruit who had just called a rile a gun" (Maclean 2). This shows how important the rod was to their family and especially their father. The rod was a very important tool that needed to be used for fishing and can be related to an important tool like a car that is important to human life.

Fish=Successes in Life

In life their are many different opportunities that can be taken. However it may take time and persistence to achieve those goals and become successful. The fish represent those opportunities and success that may take time but definitely worth while in the end. Each fish is unique just like each event and accomplishment is unique in everybody's lives. Each fish is different and has a different taste than the other, some better than others. Successes in life can have better flavors than others and that is something that relates to how fish equals the successes in a persons life. "In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing" (Maclean 1). This shows how important fishing was to them and obviously the whole goal of fishing is to catch fish. Fly-fishing is very difficult and so when a fish was caught by one of them it was a big accomplishment that they valued greatly.
