Thomas Celentano Both consumerism and the Market Revolution caused an increase in the consumption of goods from outside the home or immediate neighbors.

However, the Market Revolution caused an increase in factory produced essentials like food and other necessities, whereas the rise of consumerism caused more non-essential items to be bought, such as vacuum cleaners or washing machines. While not essential, these goods were quite useful, and contributed to a decrease in time needed to maintain a household's cleanliness.
