Great Awakening was a time period of letting go of the corrupt nature of the Puritan ways especially after the Salem witch trials which was the climax of their corruptness. Personification: Personification is used in this passage to bring life to the dark elements expressed in this piece. Edwards makes great use of personification to invoke fear among the Puritans when he describes the wrath of god which will "swallow up your thoughts" (Edwards 156).
