When you someone says Venice you instantly think of gondolas and beautiful buildings however that is just the old city. Right above that is Marghera the biggest part of Venice which is the industrial area. The industrial port, which can be seen from the old city, has over 5000 ships and 1100 oil tankers each year. There are 7 commercial terminals, 1 passenger terminal and 16 other terminals. They have many ships come in from containers, to liquid and solid bulk, steel products, Ro-Ro/Ro-Pax, general and project charge. The Port of Venice in Marghera is the only port in Italy having and inland waterways terminal. In 2003 many engineering firms started building the MOSE Profect. It was named for an acronym of its Italian name, Modulo Speeimentale Elettromeccanico. In MOSE underwater "mobile" gates are being built on the floor of the sea where the open sea enters Venice's lagoon. When the seawater rises above a certain level, air is pumped into ten gates, causing them to rise and shut out if the Adriatic Sea. The first gates are already installed and the project should be finished by 2020. There are many theories behind why Venice is sinking and many people are trying to prove their thoughts. Scientists first recognised the problem decade ago when they saw that pumping of groundwater from underneath Venice was making the city settle into the earth. The pumping stopped many years ago but Venice still continues to sink. Results showed that the city is sinking at rate of 0.03 to 0.04 inches (0.8 to 1 millimetre) per year. GPS and inSar results have shown that not jus the main heart of Venice but the lagoon including all 117 islands are sinking too. The northern parts at a rate of 2-3mm per year and the southern parts are dropping 3-4mm per year.

In 2015, the islands voted to ban cruise ship sailing along Venice's Giudecca Canal. These massive tourists boats don't just damage the canals but also every time a cruise ship is moored it lets off 10,000 passengers into the narrow streets of Venice. However, just three months after this cruise ship ban came into law, this move was overturned by the Regional Administrative Court on the mainland. 
Then earlier this year Venice's Mayor Luigi Brugnaro proposed a ticketing system for access to the main area around Piazza San Marco. Thought of this June by Councillor Massimiliano De Martin, assessor of the commune of Venice, a ban on any hotels being created out of Venice's houses. Residents of Venice have become used to seeing their houses being sold off and changed to restaurants and hotels.
Many residents are hoping that the tourism problem will soon be fixed. For Jonathan Keates, chairman of the British charity Venice in Peril, his aim is to preserve Venice as a place of great beauty where real people still live. "The plan should be to manage tourism, impose higher tourist taxes, introduce tax breaks for small businesses and favor affordable housing. Venice needs the feet of residents on the ground, children playing in the campi, old codgers on benches -- a proper Italian city as we know it."
