Folate is a very important vitamin needed before getting pregnant and during pregnancy. It is essential for your foetus to have a healthy development. Women are advised to take a folate supplement or eat foods with high folate two months before trying to get pregnant and three months into pregnancy. It reduces the risk of spinal problems and neural tube defects that can lead to things such as spina bifida. In Australia folate is added to everyday foods such as bread, breakfast cereals and fruit juice.
