The Power of a WELL-spoken Word

When someone talks about communication or language, the first thing that comes to mind is “words”. But what exactly are words? Other than being the building blocks of a language, what exactly are words capable of doing? As simple as they seem due to the easiness with which one can spit them out in a conversation, the weight they carry is tremendous. In our digital world, with the absence of body language, voice tone, and eye contact, words play a significant role in delivering a certain idea or message we’re trying to express. The number one reason for miscommunication between individuals is the inaccuracy of the words they speak. From offending others with your joke, to getting into tremendous arguments that end badly not because of the cause of it but because of the words said during it. Because we as humans are social beings, we interact and communicate all the time, whether with our families, friends, colleagues, or even strangers, we have an eagerness to connect. And the driving force of connecting is interacting through spoken words. Communication is thus the essence of our survival, and precise words are the essence of communication. Speaking alone does not guarantee communication, however, speaking accurately does. A word is a double-ended sword that can act as a symptom or a cure, a tool for deepening the wounds of a conflict or stitching up the cuts, a bridge leading to a dead end or a .. all based on the extent of its precision. Someone could have an amazing idea in mind, whether for an assignment at college or for a business plan at work, but because they fail to communicate it properly using the correct words, they end up receiving no recognition or credits for it whatsoever and it ends up going in vain. In our daily lives, our words carry the entire responsibility of determining what sort of relationship we have with others. By using inaccurate words, we often find ourselves either overstating or understating the message we’re trying so hard to deliver to others. People often underestimate the power of a single spoken word and its capabilities, the power of communicating and delivering a message EXACTLY the way it is in your head. My teacher once said, “The easiness with which you speak does not necessarily correspond with the accuracy with which you should speak, because it’s in the precision of our language where we can find the dense and the sensible, and more importantly, the real and the possible.”

Communicating Through Choreography

One of the most inspiring forms of communication is communicating through dancing. It is a form that does not need a single word to send a message, but rather uses body movements to express feelings, emotions, and even ideas! In its origins, dancing was primarily used as a source of communication for celebrations and ceremonies. The body language used in dancing projects numerous subtle feelings and moods, and communicates a certain story to the audience. When dancers are moving on stage, the chemistry between them automatically elicits a huge combination of emotions from the viewers. This liberating form of communication makes sense of the music while narrating, with the absence of words, different plot lines. It is astonishing how language is sometimes inadequate to express the meanings movements convey. Not only is there an interaction between the dancers on stage, but the audience also engages with the dancers in many different ways and forms. The forth wall (which is the invisible wall separating the stage from the dancers) can sometimes be broken with certain vivid dance routines that communicate stories very strongly. Individuals also express their personalities and characteristics through dancing, as their souls are in action during the movements. Through dancing, the physical and the emotional are made inseparable. Dancing reaches us at a fundamental place because all the moving and touching that occurs on stage is a different type of language, one that was our primary way of communicating even before words came to be. Dancing speaks for itself and communicates in the most delicate and intimate of ways. It is a universal language, meaning that no matter where a person is from, which culture they belong to, the language they are able to speak, or their level of intelligence, they will understand and relate to the dancing and the body movements. These choreographies not only unite people, but also allow them to interact using one of the most effective forms of nonverbal communication.

Creative Enough?

Creativity comes in different forms. You are required to be creative in every little thing you do: whether in cooking a meal, dressing up for work, or even choosing the design of your bedroom. People often mistake creativity for only being “artsy”, or having an artistic background. They often stick to the definition of creativity that says, “coming up with new ideas”. And by doing that, they limit themselves. Because there is so much more to creativity that just simply coming up with new ideas. Creativity is that green light your mind makes when you come up with a creation of your own. It’s that force of energy that tingles in your soul when you create something different. It is that feeling of satisfaction and happiness that fills you up when you manage to stand out. This is why creativity is not achieved but is rather enhanced. We all have a creative side to us that needs to be enhanced. What I believe pulls people backwards from nurturing and growing is the fear of not being “enough”. Not creative enough. Not good enough. Not artistic enough. We are constantly being haunted by the fear of not being “enough”. We create borderlines and definitions that we think we need to follow and fit into in order to be that creative someone. We see artists with great pieces of art, and musicians with awesome music and wonder to ourselves “who are we to be THAT good?” We have a fear of transcending the norm. A fear of defying traditional ideas. And this fear takes over our thoughts completely to an extent that we forget what we are capable of doing. We forget the fact that no matter how many creative people there are out there, our own creativity is a unique one. And this is because nobody will ever see the world through our eyes. Nobody will ever come up with the exact same thoughts and ideas as we do. Nobody will ever appreciate the same things we do. People will see empty hallways where you see beautiful museums. This is why it takes courage to step out of one’s comfort zone to do things differently. It is only when we defeat that thought of not being “enough” that we can nudge our creation or idea into the air and let our creativity flow.

Creative Beggar

One thing that really grabbed my attention is this picture of a beggar, someone who has literally nothing at all, making the most out of what he has. It shows one of the ways the lower class communicates with the higher class in the society. Out of the millions of homeless people and beggars on the street, he managed to do things differently. Instead of just normally asking for money, this guy decided to attach a label of different religions on tiny plates and hold up a cardboard paper that reads, “Which religion cares the most about the homeless?” Although this may seem meaningless or stupid to you, it is actually immensely creative. By doing that, he creates some sort of competition between people with different beliefs, making each and everyone eager to prove his/her religion as the most generous, thus benefitting him. This picture also speaks to me because people tend to find excuses like “I don’t have enough information” or “I don’t have enough artistic background” to avoid being creative, when actually all it takes to be creative is minimum thinking. Creativity isn’t about what you have, it’s about what you make out of what you have. If being a beggar is all you can ever be, be the most successful/creative beggar there is. This guy highlighted the beauty in simplicity. He also managed to communicate his message of asking for money in an effective, subtle method. This beggar succeeded in evoking feelings of sympathy without uttering a single word, by solely combining creativity with visual communication. He managed to transcend the norm in the simplest/ easiest way possible. If a beggar can be this creative, then imagine what the more fortunate could do.

Communication; Medicine to Your Soul

Communication is everywhere, literally. People communicate with each other on a daily basis. Artists communicate through sketches & colors. Musicians communicate through musical notes. Photographers through taking pictures. Actors communicate by performing scenes. Poets communicate through poetry. Dancers through movements. Businessmen through marketing. Even customers communicate with waiters through certain placements of forks and knives. Cars communicate through lights. Athletes communicate on the filed through positioning and saying certain words. The opera has a certain lighting system that communicates messages to the audience. And the list goes on.. But, have you ever looked at communication from a different perspective? Have you ever thought about communication as a medicine? Have you ever thought about how it can actually cure people and make them feel better? People suffering from mental disorders go to therapists for the sole reason of communicating in order to feel better. Addicts and alcoholics attend recovery groups regularly that, no matter the different methods they use for recovery, still depend mainly on communication. And, most importantly, many people refer to art therapy for recovery. The dictionary’s definition of art therapy is, “a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well being.” Art therapy allows one to draw freely whatever they’re feeling in order to express themselves and get the negative energy out of their bodies. Through art therapy, people are able to create things out of their misery. Art therapy is able to transform bad experiences and broken souls into beautiful pieces of art. This form of creative expression also allows people who are suffering from the same disorder to communicate, relating to one another on an intimate level. It lights up the allies of their minds. It is a way of treatment that gives individuals the chance to let their inner-selves speak up in a way that can provide them with a deeper understanding of who they are. Often times, people find themselves incapable of expressing themselves with the limits of languages. In that case, art therapy is a good solution for expression and communication. Communication can thus be an effective form of healing, treatment, and rehabilitation.

The greatest inspiration I found in my chosen photograph is the coexistance of multicolors during sunset, and the contrast between the darkness in reality and the light in the mirror. This was resembled in my design by the gradual change in colors from top to bottom (yellow-orange-red-light blue-dark blue/ lighter to darker). The idea of a short dress from the front and long from the back is inspired from the difference between the back and front of the picture, showing a long night at the back (darkness) and a short one in the front (light). The silhouette trees form accessories (necklace and earrings) along with black patterns on the dress. The passing car in the photograph, which conveys the idea of speed & shows the irony of how this steady picture is taken in the midst of a busy day, is mimiced by the patterns in the top half of the dress. The patterns start of with close, consistent pencil strokes that scatter as you move down the dress (speed). The overall colors of the dress strike an image of a vivid sunset in the viewer's/ designer's mind.
