Two contrasting rhetorical devices seen in Cather's perspective are symbolism and imagery, which demonstrates her unique ability to show remarkably compound landscapes within delightfully expressive writing. She brilliantly includes symbolism and imagery to express lowest point of emotions that are generally applicable, while artfully portraying the victories or failures of her characters. This is based on the conflict between the landscape of home and art is played out dramatically by the central character. The geography isn't just what influences the change but also Cather physically visiting then becoming obsessed to the desert and isolated places as a result.

Cather has contrasting viewpoints about the west which changed and developed over her time in the west. In the article, the author quotes a paradoxical statement from a man named Bazato. He said, "In the desert there is everything and nothing—God without mankind" which inspired Cather to have a newfound appreciation of the land. This contrasts with her original perspective that the Western town was an “ugly little western town”. This generalization showcases her presumptuous and immature viewpoint about the west. The voice in these two quotes shows how she not only how her viewpoint about the west developed but also how she matured through her experiences.
