Embedding international-mindedness wall by Pauline D

Develop a plan of things you could implement in your classroom or school to embed international-mindedness. You can choose whatever tool you like to make this plan (text, audio, video, etc.).
Can you make this change alone?
Who might you need to collaborate with?
Is this a short-term strategy or a long-term strategy?
How will you know it is working?

Several things can be done in international schools to develop international-mindedness in the school community. Activities could be once a year, as in a food festival or international culture week, or throughout the year, like visiting performing groups, speakers, weekly assemblies, in-class activities, etc.

Full- or Part- Time Faculty Position

Ideally, there would be an employee at every international school whose sole responsibility at the school would be to develop ways the school can develop international-mindedness. This individual would meet with and advise the PYP, MYP, and DP teachers and administrators and initiate programs, purchase materials, arrange cultural performances at the school, arrange for parent involvement in the school on a cultural/linguistic level, write a blog, establish a library with books in different languages and about different cultures. This individual could organize a school culture week, an international food festival, workshops on cross-cultural communication for the faculty and parents, after-school language classes for students, teachers, and parents, etc.

Mother Tongue Language Classes After School

Normally Dutch children in any country are provided by the Dutch government with language classes taught by experienced teachers of Dutch language after school. For those children who don’t have access to online language classes, they can attend language classes in a classroom at school after school hours. The difficulty here may be in finding qualified teachers.

At some international schools mother tongue classes are offered during school hours.

International Culture Weeks

Some international schools have celebrations of the students cultures through parades, sharing of foods from different nations, student and parent presentations, speakers, visiting cultural performing groups of music, theater, or dance.

School Assemblies

At school assemblies students can do slide or video presentations about their countries. They can teach the others some words in their languages, show maps, play popular music, share a dance, etc.

Reading Books at School in the Home Language

Students can bring books to read in their languages and read parts of them tp their classes, so their classmates can be exposed to the sounds of other languages. Students could also feel free to share their ideas or write in their mother tongues for some assignments. Parent volunteer could come to school sometimes and offer mother tongue support where needed.

After-School Clubs

Students or teachers could lead clubs after school which would expose students to other cultures. For example, some high school students at one school I taught at organized a Vietnam Club. Any student was welcome to join the group and learn more about Vietnam and its customs.

School Web Site Blogs

On the school web site there could be a section related to international-mindedness in the school or local community. It could include photos and posts about upcoming performances at school or in the community, language classes offered, and other cultural experiences that may be available.

School Displays

Anyone should be able to walk into an international school and see all kinds of flags, artwork from other countries (or by students), other languages, etc. It should be colorful and exciting since people from different nations visit often. Maybe parent groups or embassies could sponsor decorations or displays for the schools.

							                      Lynne Harding

Suggestions for Strategies for Encouraging International-Mindedness in Your School

There are many ways to foster international-mindedness in your school. Some of the activities can by done by one teacher with the students, some can and should be done collaboratively depending on the planning and implementing the specific idea.

Topics with Local, National and Global significance
Think of atleast five topics with local, national or global significance. Pin them on the display and then split the students into groups. Each group will take an issue and they will have to think of some ideas how to develop some answers to the existing problems. After that each groups thinks a way to present it in front of others. It will be important to note in the instruction that every member of the group has to take part of the presentation. The problems can be for example: How to make our nighbourhood more cleaner place; how to stop the use of plastic and with what we can replace it in our daily living; How to make the world more peacefull place; How to stop inequality and poverty around the world; How to sort our waste more efficiently; How society can create more clean ways for transportation? These are all topics that are world issues and surely will encourage international-mindedness when students engage with them.
This is a short-term strategy which can grow into long-term if implemented as action and will need a collaborative work.

The Learner Profile as an instrument for encouraging international-mindedness

Give a specific attribute of the Learner Profile to the students. The attributes are 10 and depending on the number of students you can create 20 sticky notes and write the attributes. Each attribute has to be with two notes (Thinkersx2). Each student takes a note and then they meet together. After that they will have to make a short scene which represents the specific attribute.
This is a short-term strategy.

Discussions
Have a discussion with the class with topics: What is like to be international-minded person? How international-mindedness can change our way of seeing other people and the world as a whole?
This is a short-term strategy.

Podcasts
Children love different technologies. Create a school podcast and make series dedicated to international-mindedness. Make the students speak about that topic with connection to the activities at school. Perhaps you can involve some parents to come to the school's studio to talk about it too. After that they will be motivated to share the episode with other people.
This is a long-term strategy.

Videos
Students can become a reporters which go around the school and make interviews with teacher asking them question about what is like to be international-minded person or ask them questions about what is like to be, for example, knowledgeable, thinker, etc.
This is a short-term strategy which also can be grown into long-term, depending on the plans for publications online.

Learner Profile Attributes Gamification
There are many ways to transform IB terminology into different types of games.
Think of ways to create games based on the Learner Profile with the children. One of them could be like the following: GIve the students a lot of white sheets of paper as big as a playing card. Pick up one attribute and for 5 minutes (or maybe for homework) students have to think for some activities which represent that attribute (example: Risk-taker: to explore unknown area of knowledge). Do that with every one of the attributes. After that reflect with the students card by card is the activity ok for the specific attribute. When you are finished put all the cards in a wooden box. A game (or different games) from now on can be played. For example: Each student picks up a card from the deck and puts it on or under the card for the specific attribute which are displayed on the floor on somewhere else. The game ends when all cards are being put on the right place. There can be different modifications for the game. Another mode could be the same goal of the game but this time students receive a number of cards for their own and they have to put them on the right attribute. The one who finishes his cards is the winner. If that game is interesting and the cards are not enough you can create a project and to print those cards in a printing shop. It is also interesting that some cards can become school projects and even unit planners.
This is also a short-term strategy which can grow into long-term if students get involved into thinking different types of games based on IB terminology and framework.

My thoughts and my plan

To establish international mindset for our young students is definitely not a job achieved by one person. It needs the work of whole school, whole community and even whole society. I have some tentative thoughts and suggestions:

Make foreign language course core course

In Wisconsin State and some other northern states foreign language is a selective course, which means students do not have to take a foreign language course to get graduated. Because of this, a lot of students tend to choose classes that is easy to pass to get the credit. Foreign language course is put in the same position as classes that is doing food preparing, Band, Choir, Art, Metal Work, etc.. Most of the selective courses do not even have examinations. Foreign language learning, comparatively speaking, is more challenging. So I am going to work with other world language teachers to promote world language.

Collaboration with teaching communities

As a Mandarin and ELL teacher, I will work with my colleagues to make our lessons more interesting and dynamic.

I will actively attend the sessions of World Language Teachers Conference to keep myself being up to date with new thoughts and ideas in terms of classroom activities, teaching strategies etc.

I will Use a variety of interesting instructional/learning approaches to motivate students. Apart from traditional style teaching/ learning, I will integrate gaming, projects, online learning into our classroom. With diversification, we can reach more students and encourage being international. We can also organize international travel. Our high school students has been doing that for years now.

Appreciating culture, appreciate diversity

Culture is a soft power to bring the world together. Every culture has its unique beauty and attraction. I will always encourage our community (students, parents, neighborhood) to appreciate instead of repel a new culture. A culture day in the community can be a great beginning to bring people together to enjoy food, music, clothing, laughing and chatting. I will always tell my students that an accepting and understanding attitude is not only important for the academic success, but also for building up a positive and a happy personal life. As a language and culture instructor, I know too well that this human quality is of vital significance to bring out a well-rounded joyful global citizen.

In conclusion, I think only through ordinary day to day life and day to day regular classwork can we gradually implant the seeds of international perspective into our children’s mind. We begin from small angle, but eventually we will build up a global village. It takes time and energy.

Suggestion to Encourage International-mindedness in Schools I would start simply by exploring the concept of ‘International-Mindedness’. Explicitly teaching this idea. Focussing on this concept with the children allows them to express their ideas or thoughts and have ownership of the learning. This inquiry could lead to student led school wide initiatives that promote international mindedness.Lesson 1. I would begin by asking students to choose some visual thinking tools to answer wonderings around idea or concept of International-mindedness. Thinking tools: around the concept of International Mindedness (Stage 1) Y chart (what it looks like, sounds like, feels like) . CIS (Colour, Image, Symbol etc) ‘True/ False / Not sure cards’ in reference to statements such as “International-mindedness means trying foods from different countries”. This would be followed by discussion and debate. Thinking Keys- Tony Ryan Opposite Key: What does National Mindedness look like? What if key: What if there were no borders?Mindmaps and Brainstorms The Next Phrase would depend on the students responses. Research and investigation and ideas suggestions could be cultural events, guest speakers, displays, surveys, greetings of week, a global school newspaper featuring different articles, ‘walk a mile in someone elses shoes’ public awareness campaign.

I will be teaching Kindergarten which would make it challenging at first, but they can draw pictures. They could share with an older grade class in another country what things are like here. They could tell about their lives here in the United States and even ask questions. It would probably work best with my young students to have an older grade to work with. This would work with well with all of the IB attributes: communicator, risk-taker, thinker, open-minded, caring, etc. I am not sure how to contact another country's class though.

To be international-minded students need to be exposed to cultures and different perspectives. Since I work on finding and teaching host nation links to the unit of inquiry, I was thinking of letting students also share links from their homelands or culture to the unit of inquiry. I could encourage parents to come into class to introduce something about their country or culture whenever it links to the unit. I can also encourage parents to help their kids to take ownership of special events in the calendar related to their culture and help them to prepare to teach the class about their culture.

Since I am an assistant teacher and I work with 2 classes, I will definitely need the help of the 2 homeroom teachers I work with. And since I will be attempting to do this for all 6 units of inquiry it may more likely be a long term goal.

Establishing international mindedness in a school is definitely not something that could be done by one individual alone. It is vital that all teachers and staff are on the same page when it comes to implementing international mindedness in young students. The school community can achieve positive results by collaborating, planning and promoting this specific idea. If the school has a strong, positive belief and stance toward international mindedness, then it could be positively passed onto parents, who might consider following up with their children at home. If parents and teachers aim to educate students toward an international minded approach to life, then a plan must be developed to support the process:

1) The school's philosophy about international mindedness plays a crucial role in establishing the appropriate behavior in the school community. Once an explicit and shared set of values clarifies how the school wises to operate, then all members of the school can receive the guidance needed for their actions. If the school makes their missions, values and ethical statements clear for teachers, students and parents and are carried to practice, then they are providing the essentials for educating students toward international mindedness. Promotion could be done through student led assemblies, where parents are invited to attended, or teacher parent conferences.

2) A school committee should be in charge for solely promoting and educating international mindedness. These individuals should be knowledgeable in the international mindset and of the school's international philosophy. This committee can organize cultural activities and events for students and even field trips based on educating students in other cultures. Young students should be exposed to various cultures and people from a young age, in order for them to get used to the idea that diversity is the norm. Creating a school culture to reflect this norm is therefore critical. Invite parents to get involved in this committee as well.

3) Students should be encouraged to learn with, about and in connection with one another. International mindedness can begin by simply learning about another person in the school. Something interesting that could be done within the school is a common research project on a student in another grade level. Teachers can pair up their classes and their students and have them ponder on a selected topic. For instance, they can learn about what types of holidays they celebrate with their families and what traditions they follow. What language do they speak at home? The students can then compare their friend's lifestyle to their own. At the end of the project, each student can make a small poster with the partner's picture on it and stating what they learned and how it compares to their lifestyle. A mural can be created with these posters and could be put up for the parents and visitors to see. This will promote a school that is unified.

4) Extra curricular language learning can also promote an international mindset. Here is Quebec, this can serve to an advantage for school's teaching English or French alone. Encouraging students to learn a third or even a fourth language can be a great asset to them. It helps them think in a different way and learn in a different way. However, exposure to multiple languages can be incorporated into the curriculum in many creative ways. such as the postcard exchange program or pen pals, where each student communicates with another student from another country. I taught sign language to my kindergarten class to encourage communication with a student in grade 2 who was deaf.

Finally, I would call this a long term strategy because there is always room for trial and error. Also with any other successful program, should come some sort of professional development for teachers and staff. They should always have access to seminars that help them integrate International mindedness in the curriculum for a stronger and consistent approach toward international mindedness.

Suggestions to encourage International-mindedness in schools No one educator can take on this challenge alone, the whole school is involved which encourages learning that fosters responsible citizenship and international‐mindedness and it extends to people and resources outside of the classroom. The Learner profile traits foster International mindedness. The transdisciplinary themes connect students learning to wider human conditions. This is a long term strategy. To take suitable action, in making the world a better place, students have to learn to value their own culture and those of others across the globe. I agree with all of Lynne’s ideas as we have them in our school and there are great for embedding International – mindedness in schools. Additional ways to foster International – mindedness in an International school and in the classroom are as below: The entire school community - students, parents/caregivers, teachers and leaders and the local community, all need to be committed in fostering International – mindedness. Have students create short films, TV programs, blogs, podcasts, wikis etc. focusing on international issues as extensions of class work. Screen foreign films and identify differences in cultural outlook and explore the basis for these differences. Invite guest speakers to address specific international questions or issues. Take the students to a temple, church, mosque and have someone speak about religion and the culture it informs One activity is to ask foreign students to speak about what they find most difficult in adapting to their host culture and why this is so and also ask local students to speak about what they find most difficult to accept about people from other cultures and why this is so. Then ask all students to share their insights into what these differences mean and how they might be addressed. This could be done in the form of a debate on a special school calendar day. As part of CAS, have students engage in humanitarian work in another country. Have an IM awareness week involving the whole school community. Establish an award to be presented annually at graduation to the student who writes an essay on an IM theme. Publish a regular column in the student school newspaper devoted to exploring cultural themes (the younger students could draw). Use art as a means of exploring IM. Encourage foreign student exchange programs. Celebrate International Day. Connect classrooms internationally. Use technology to connect across countries and cultures. Have language clubs. This activity could be named ‘Language Fest Day’, organize an inter-school ‘Language Fest Day’ which could be held for two days, where students talk about the history, culture and way of life in their country, using technology. Show IM videos and have loads of IM books in the school library. Community Service Programs. Also have students collect old clothes, toys etc., which could be given to a special home for children and their families. Another activity, could be tying up with an NGO to collect old newspapers, to be recycled and the NGO gives a sapling to be planted. The students can plant this in school, at home or in a park. Create theatre highlighting IM issues is a great way of embedding International -mindedness. All of these can be linked to the Learners profile attributes. Some of these suggestions are long-term and some are short-term.

1. Firstly, make sure to introduce the IB learner profile to the children as the purpose of the attributes from the profile is to develop and demonstrated international mindedness.
2.Class should celebrate all cultures of children by celebrating festivities and involving parents to bring books to read from the home countries. They can make connections to their own culture through the UNIT of who we are, making giving opportunities to talk about who they are and where their from by doing activities like creating Me bags.
3. Connect with a classroom in a different part of the world. Become pen pals with students in different countries to learn more about different views and cultures.
4. Always connect the units of inquiry with the host nation culture so the children gets more exposure - through field trips or guest speakers

These are changes cannot be done by myself, but as a whole community. Teacher, parents and children themselves as well as other stakeholders who are part of children's learning and development. I would love to collaborate with school in different countries. It would be exciting and interesting to work with another grade 2 class at an IB school across the world and see the connections or the their take on different things.
Most of these strategies are long term and most importantly should be consistent throughout the years and the grade levels.
It will be seen through the children's sense of belonging, their attitude towards others and themselves, and when they initiate action for positive change around the world they live in.

Plan for Embedding international-mindedness

1. INTERNATIONAL GARAGE SALE
2. We would make an "International Garage Sale", that means that the students (most of our students are foreigners/ expatriated) have to bring something to the school garage sale, that will be sold, but it has to be something from their county, in order to develop their international mindedness.
3. Why: as said before, it will be made to develop students` international mindedness and also stimulate their global citizen atributes, for example: #principled = they will be told to respect other`s culture and value it.
#risk-taker = as it is a "business fair", they will take the risk of making business.
#communicator = they will have to talk in order to sell their things.
#Inquiring = it should stimulate their curiosity on learning about different cultures,
and so on.
4. How long/ when: it would be quarter of year project, exposing them to it, telling about different cultures, preparing families (with workshop) about it, and in one Saturday morning would be the International Garage Sale.
5. Whom: it would be specially for the students, though the whole school stakeholders will be envolved, and also the local community will be invited (banners and fliers will be used for it).
6. What with: the objects that the kids will sell, the school will prepare the stalls. And the students will decorate them in order to add value to their stuff.
7. Additionally, events like these are really good marketing strategies, it is an opportunity for the locals to know the school better, and invest in their children`s future in such a school.

That way it will also be a long-term strategy. Analyzing the result, in this matter a concert, with my students I think we’ll have a good picture if this was working or not.
