Whos The Goat?:

Lebron James vs Michael Jordan

Lebron. Jordan. Kareem. Hakeem. Kobe. Shaq. Magic. Bird. Russell. What do these players all have in common? They are all time NBA greats. There's obviously many more, but the point is, they are game changing. A common question the basketball community asks is, who’s the greatest? Or the GOAT, which is Greatest Of All Time. Once this question is asked, the majority of people bring the list down to 2 people. Lebron, and Jordan. Although all these players are crazy good, Lebron and Jordan stand out from the rest. Each have their own cases to be number 1, and both have their own supporters for the spot. Overall, it is unfair to say which was better because they played in different time periods, but still, it is fun for NBA fans to think about this.

Statistics are a major factor to figuring out a player's skill. According to the article Progressive GOAT Rankings, which is based on statistics rather than what people think, Lebron is better. They use a point system called GOAT points to determine player rankings. These points take into account many important statistics. Lebron won in this ranking system, and funny enough, Jordan was actually 3rd. So according to statistics, Lebron is easily the GOAT, considering he won by over 20 points at a little over 100. Another one of the most popular reasons for Lebron being the goat is the fact he made 10 NBA championships! This is an amazing accomplishment and he is now tied for 3rd all-time in finals appearances. He has more finals appearances than Jordan which is a common argument for Lebron fans. Jordan has only made 6. Another reason is that Jordan might have had a better team because when Jordan went to play baseball, his team still was the 2nd best in the eastern conference one year, and 3rd the other. When Lebron left his old team, they went from 50 wins, to 19 wins the following season. So they were terrible without him.

Many players still say Michael Jordan is the best. Hakeem Olajuwon, one of the greatest players ever, was in an interview and said “When people start comparing him with Jordan, then that’s not a fair comparison. Jordan was a far more superior player in a very tough league…” Once a pro-player says this, and this is an amazing one too, it becomes clear why Jordan is the GOAT to so many people. Now Olajuwon is an older player, who played against Jordan, so there might be some biased opinions, but he thinks it's not close. Which says a lot about Jordan. Another advantage Jordan has in this debate is that he has more finals wins. He has 6 finals appearances, and 6 wins. Lebron has 4 wins. Jordan averaged more points than Lebron throughout their whole careers, and Lebron had 2 seasons when averaging 30+ points, while Jordan averaged 30+ points in his entire career! Jordan’s accolades also are better because he had more MVPs, finals MVPs, scoring titles, all defensive first teams, and DPOY. This also shows that Jordan is a better defender. And without Jordan the Bulls franchise had never won a championship, or made the championship. Overall, since all time legends say Jordan is the best, there is a valid argument in why you can pick Jordan.

One more opinion people have is that there is no singular greatest player. Dwayne Wade who is also an NBA champion and legend claimed “When we talk about the GOAT conversations, it doesn’t matter who is the GOAT.” Also Collin Sexton, an NBA player who is somewhat new to the league, at only 21 years old, was asked his thoughts on the topic and said “There are three of them, you can’t really say one is the GOAT because of the different time eras. Gotta say Kobe, LeBron, MJ. Don’t think there’s just one person, don’t know how LeBron would’ve played in MJ’s era or Kobe in MJ’s era. They’re the GOATs in their eras.” Personally, I agree with this argument the most. Although one or the other might’ve been better players, I don't think it is possible to compare the 2 because of the completely different style of play they had, the competition was at different levels, and simply because they never faced off. So I believe that there is a goat for each decade, and era, so there are more arguments like head to head matchups and it's easier to judge competition.

In the end, either argument is valid because people will have your back no matter what. And they are both amazing players! So, you decide. Who is the goat?

Morgan- Should college athletes get paid?

An ongoing debate has been going on and whether or not College athletes should be paid. Many people think that since College athletes do so much for the college and the team they should be paid. However this may not be true. College athletes should not be paid because colleges can't afford to pay the athletes, and Most student-athletes are offered some type of financial support.

To start off College athletes should be paid because colleges can't afford to pay the athletes. “According to economist Jeffrey Dorfman, only a few collegiate sports actually bring in money for their schools. College football, as well as men’s and women’s basketball, are big money makers, but most other programs actually lose money.” This means that the programs would actually being losing the little bit of money that they make. This would obviously not be good for the colleges or the players. Losing that money would make it's so that the programs would not keep advancing and getting better and the resources that the players need to become better athletes, the colleges would not be able to buy. Adding on, “college sports are not professional sports, and treating student athletes like professionals exploits them and takes away the spirit of amateurism from college sports.” College sports is a step up from Youth and high school sports but it is still not professional sports. Most college students are just learning how to handle Finances so paying them would not be a smart option. College students need to know how to spend their income and where to spend it before they start getting paid big money.

Secondly, Most college athletes are offered some type of scholarship. “As a student athlete you are offered scholarships that completely cover tuition, room and board, meal plans and fees.” Maybe not all college athletes are offered this type of scholarship but some are. This means that you are getting education for free. And for the student-athletes that don't get this scholarship most of the time they will wind up getting something for free. so when they are playing sports for the college it's not like they're getting nothing in return. Furthermore, “In fact, the average student will graduate more than $24,000 in debt, while the student athlete will have none whatsoever.” Most people Are still paying off their student loans for at least 10 years after college. So colleges are saving Student Athletes a lot of money. So in the end, colleges are paying the players in one way or another.

Some may say that Student athletes put their body’s on the line for the team and the college. They say that they bring lots of income for the college and the program so in return they should get paid. However that may not be entirely true. Like stated earlier in the article only a few college sports bring in income. So student-athletes may not be bringing in a lot of income. Additionally student-athletes play the game for the love of it not to get paid. so they choose to put their bodies on the line and to play their sport because they love it.

To summarize College athletes should not get paid because if they did colleges would be in debt, and most student-athletes already get some type of scholarship for playing a sport. Many people still will think of this should get paid but that is okay. You can try and help them understand by explaining to them why they shouldn't get paid or maybe even write an article to get the word out. But in the end there was a roommate that college athletes should not get paid for a reason.

angelina (the basics of interior design)

Interior design is the art or process of designing the interior decoration of a room or building. You might be wondering what interior design is or you might have heard of it before, but in this article, we will break it down from how to become a designer and to all the different types.

Now To start we are going to break down how you should start a project and the basics. The first task you gotta do is select a style with your client or for yourself so that you will create a theme/ mood that you want to be portrayed in that area. You want to do that so there is balance and not too much going on. After that we need to make sure that the weight of the room is being distributed because the goal is to make the room look bigger than it actually is. Once that's done you're gonna need to choose a focal point, a color, texture, or pattern, maybe even multiple. This is an essential point because you can have different styles and color schemes in each room but the hardest part is to make sure that these rooms are not competing; there has to be something that at least ties them together and the same is true with patterns. Now that you know the basics, if you still are unsure here are a few things to consider before you decide to pursue this job. Usually, a bachelor’s degree is required, as there are interior design classes that come along with it. In those classes, you focus on drawing, CAD (computer-aided design), and of course interior design. Depending on what state you are in, licenses and certifications vary; like in some states you may still do such work but the way you are labeled as an interior designer is only if you are licensed, but in others, you can be labeled on one even if you don't have a license. Moving on, interior designers work closely with architects, civil engineers, and construction helpers so it is easier to determine how the spaces of their design will function, be furnished, and, most importantly, look. Now, if you were wondering why they sometimes work with construction workers, that is because sometimes if they are redoing a room they might have to demo it and start from scratch. You finally have learned all the hard and complicated factors of being an interior designer and you’ll now learn some styles in the interior design world.

Congrats, you made it this far and you're almost done. In this part, we are going to go through most of the different types of interior design. According to “New decor trends” the top 6 styles are, mid-century modern, industrial, Scandinavian, boho chic, farmhouse, classic renovated, and Hollywood regency. First up is mid-century modern, this is an innovative style that includes clean forms of elegance, the elimination of unnecessary accessories and details, the structure is shown and not hidden, fluency, and natural elements like wood. Next, there is industrial, which includes large windows, very high ceilings, minimalism, wood, brick, lots of steel, exposed beams and pipes, using color styles on the neutral side with browns and grays. After that there is Scandinavian, and it's a branch of the modern movement in which, some characteristics involve soft contours, simplicity, balancing the use of industrial and organic materials, contemporary and functional forms, basic elements that bring comfort and warmth to the environment, and colors like beige white or gray. Following up after Scandinavian is boho chic. The bohemian style represents the lifestyle of people who enjoy simple things but also include contact with nature; this is a pretty casual style, with colors that stand out, use of natural elements liken wood and animal print, metallic details, Moroccan accessories, nomadic elements, succulents, plants, and upholstery or decorative carpets with simple designs and patterns. Next, there is farmhouse chic, a modern approach to rustic or farmhouse, and it's inspired by an English cottage in the countryside. There are some traditional elements mixed, colors range from white, lilac, turquoise, soft yellow, and beige, aged wood, upholstered patterned fabrics, vintage accessories, light wood washes for the kitchen cabinets, flower arrangements, etc. After that, there is classic renovated and that is the classic style evolved towards more contemporary; to get the classic renovated decoration you need contrast between light walls and dark furniture, traditional forms like molding on ceilings walls and doors, skirting boards, a mix of modern pieces through it finishing material, and simple furniture combined with high-quality fabrics. Lastly is Hollywood regency, which is known for being full of glam and drama. The style includes bright and bold patterns, tufted sofas, European designs, tile floors, loud color pallets, giant sculptures, and wallpaper full of designs.
You made it! Now you know everything you need to know about interior design and how to become one. But the last thing that is super super cool is that many people/partners have become famous for their interior design work and have their own show. So really if you push hard in life for what you want and really show yourself through your work people will eventually fall in love with it and want to see more and more of what you could do.

Aphrochic, the spruce, Decorating 101: Interior Design Basics

Raiseme, Interior Designers: Salary, career path, job outlook, education, and more

Decor aid, everything you need to know: 20 interior design styles defined in 2019

Decorilla, The ultimate guide to defining decorating styles in 2020

Rochele, 14 most popular interior design styles explained

Flaws in the school system

The school system is flawed and it is stressing out a lot of people for no reason. When a kid is going through school they always think that if they have bad grades they are stupid and if they have good grades they are smart but that is not the case. A wise man named Albert Einstein once said “ Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This quote directly connects with the way of a school system. If there's a kid who is really good at something and they never do it in school they will be stressed out and think they are stupid. They will see that they have D’s and F’s as their grades and think that they are a failure and then find they have a purpose in life and then they will realize they just never knew what they were good at.

Kids when they are in elementary school, middle school, and in highschool find themselves looking up to others and feeling down on themselves when they have lower grades then another person. This can cause kids to lose motivation and that is very bad for their mental health for example, “When the grade is the focus, in other words, we tend to lose our intrinsic motivation, and school becomes a sort of game to be won before “real” life begins.Myriad studies show that intrinsic motivation is critical for success in life.” From an early age kids get taught that if they do bad in school they will do bad in life. Kids think this and that can cause stress and cause them to only have one thing stuck in their head. They think that they need to have good grades and that is it and nothing else matters. Then when the kid does bad they lose all motivation which needs to be stopped.

When kids are stuck in one system and have set guidelines for everything they need to do their creative ideas start to funnel out of their body. They think if they do what everyone else does and that will help them be perfect, “ Students to lose their natural creativity and conform to dull, meaningless standards. In this way, schools often prevent students from flourishing to their maximum potential.” If all kids are supposed to follow what everyone says there will be no diversity and everything will be dull. This will make everything in life boring and cause students to stick to rules and procedures like they are in a factory. They have to follow these rules and procedures in order for everything to be perfect and that is not the case. When students use the creative side of their mind that can help them see new limits that they never knew they had before.

This article isn’t telling you that if you have terrible grades in school and you don’t try at all it is ok. You still need to work hard and gain a work ethic to be successful in life. Though if you are stressed right now remember that the brightest stars in the sky aren’t the ones that shine first it is the ones that shine later.

March Madness History - Matteo B

It was 1851; the very first bracket in a sports tournament came from a chess tournament in London. English chess master, Howard Staunton was to organize the world’s first international chess tournament with a bracket. This led to 1939, the very first NCAA tournament with eight teams placed in a single-elimination bracket. Win or go home. The first-ever NCAA men’s tournament champions were the Oregon Ducks who beat the Ohio State Buckeyes, 46-33. Ever since then, additions have been made to the brackets. In 1959, there were 23 teams in the bracket. In the 60s and 70s, the UCLA Bruins won 10 championships in 12 years. So to make it interesting, the tournament expanded from 25 to 32 teams. Then 32 to 53. And now 53 to 64 teams which is where we are now.

The term “March Madness” came from an Illinois High School Official in 1939. This term wasn’t used for the tournament until a CBS broadcaster used it during the 1982 tournament. It has been named this ever since. Another term used during March Madness is “upset”. This is when a lower seed team beats a higher seed team (for example, a 10 seed beats a 2 seed). This happens many times each year shocking fans and ruining fans’ brackets. The biggest upset in MM history was when 16 seed (worst seed) UMBC beat the 1 seed, Virginia, which was the first time in history a 16 seed had beat a 1 seed. Every year, fans fill out brackets, based on who they predict to win each game. Fans can do it with family, friends, and possibly win money. Nobody in history has ever filled out a perfect MM bracket. The odds of this happening are shockingly 1 in 9.2 quintillion. The best bracket ever filled out had an 85.7% accuracy.

Usually, the March Madness games are spread out around the country. But for this year because of COVID, every game will be held in one geographical location for the first time ever. Every game will be played in Indianapolis, Indiana and the players will stay in a nearby hotel. Teams will practice at the Indiana Convention Center where several courts are with a gym. Keep in mind, the Women’s MM is also taking place here. So far, we are already halfway through the tournament and this year has had the most upsets in MM history, the biggest one this year being 15 seed Oral Roberts beating the 2 seed, Ohio State Buckeyes, 75-72.

This year, about 7.6 million people watched the Final Four teams in the tournament compete with each other to take home the trophy. Every year millions enjoy watching the exciting March Madness tournaments with their family and friends. You can root for the teams you chose to win in your brackets or you can watch for fun. These tournaments have always been so exciting and surprising to watch and it will continue on as a fan favorite tournament.

The Theft of 1990 - Audrey Ricks

Little over thirty years ago, on March 18th, 1990, two policemen arrived at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. They rang the buzzer at exactly 1:20 am, asking to investigate a disturbance. One of the only two guards on duty, Rick Abath, age 23, admitted them at 1:24. The policemen went in and found the desk at which Abath was sitting. They asked the guard to come closer, and Abath did as he was told. They were policemen, after all. Or at least, they looked like policemen.

Minutes later, Abath and his companion could be found handcuffed to pipes, their mouths duct-taped, and trapped in the cellar of the museum away from each other, leaving two criminals free in a building filled with hundred-million-dollar, world-famous items. 13 objects were stolen that night, and have never been located since.

Most headline-making heists like these last less than five minutes—a quick in-and-out sort of deal, where the thieves pop in, grab what they came for, and run. However, the thieves of this heist somehow found a way to make theirs last not five, not ten, but an entire hour and twenty-one minutes long. The criminals take their leave at exactly 2:45 am—eighty-one minutes after their arrival.

Right after they deal with the guards, they head directly to a room in the museum called the Dutch Room. The thieves headed over to the wall next to the doorway, and took it down and placed Rambrandt’s (a famous Dutch artist from the 17th century) “Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee'' on the floor. This painting was Rembrandt’s only seascape, worth about $100 million. Another Rem- brandt painting was also taken down and set on the ground. Once the thieves had taken down both of these paintings, they took out a sharp blade. Using this, they cut—yes, cut—the paintings out of their frames. Slits and scars ripped through the wooden supports, leaving sickening gashes where the paintings used to be.

The next stolen painting was by a student of Rembrandt, still in the same room. This painting used to be where the empty frame is now, near the windows. They do the same to this that they did to the first two artworks.

After this, the thieves take another painting, not by Rembrandt, but by Vermeer this time, called The Concert. By the movement scanners throughout the museum, it is known that the criminals take the painting over to the tables, remove the painting, and let the frame fall, glass-down. At the crime scene, shards of glass littered the floor where the frame was dropped.

Strangely, the following stolen object isn’t a famous painting, but a Chinese bronze vessel, placed on the table in front of the rightmost painting on this wall (the one with the man dressed in red). It had been secured to a base beneath the table, so when the thieves tried to lift it, it wouldn’t budge. They cut the fabric around it, and yet it was still secured to the base. Even stranger, they still kept at it, hacking at that base until it was free, though it had no particular priceless value nor worldwide fame. It will forever remain a mystery to the public why they took so much time on just this one object, incongruous with the others.

The second-to-last artwork that caught their eyes from the Dutch Room is another Rembrandt. It was a small one, and instead of cutting out the painting or dropping the frame, the thieves went back over to the table area and stood there, taking their time unscrewing the art from the frame. They take nearly five minutes to unscrew it, which, like mentioned earlier, is normally how long any other heist would take in total.

The final piece attempted to be taken from this room is a self-portrait of, you guessed it, our favorite Dutch artist, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. However, this painting is still there in the museum. After placing the artwork on the floor, the thieves forgot about it. They must’ve thought they had it with them, because they moved onto the next room without it. Even the Museum's director couldn't find it at first, and she was looking in the daylight the next day at the crime scene.

The next gallery the thief looked in is called the Short Gallery. The thief, leaving his partner behind in the other room, had broken one of the many glass panels that covered a wall in the gallery, and took five drawings from inside, all by the artist Edgar Degas. He then tried for a Napoleon flag, and yet after investigating closer, it turns out it wasn’t the flag the thief wanted—it was the bronze eagle on top of the frame. Though the twelve artworks they stole that night were obvious, it was not until later that this thirteenth object had been found missing.

This thief then takes all of these items back to his partner in the Dutch Room. After this, they unload all of the artworks into their van. Notice how there are still only twelve objects listed in this article so far. This is because the final object, a portrait of a man in a top hat, was stolen from the Blue Room, on the second floor this time. However, the motion sensors did not pick up anything within this room. No one knows when the thieves entered this room and stole the portrait—the motion sensors were working fine the next morning, though the picture was clearly gone, its frame left at the security desk.

Before they left, the thieves knew that their motions were being tracked. They took the printed copy of what the sensors had picked up, as if thinking now no one will know their trail throughout the museum. What they did not think of was that all someone had to do was reprint that same sheet.

The reward for the stolen artworks—all thirteen of them, in good condition—is ten million dollars ($10,000,000), and the recovery of just the Napoleonic eagle finial is an entire one-hundred thousand dollars ($100,000). “Not a day goes by that we’re not still working alongside the FBI on the case,” says Anthony Amore, the Gardner’s Museum’s Chief of Security and Chief Investigator. “We want everyone to know what these works look like,” he says, “because although they are gone—for now—they are not forgotten, and we look forward to the day when they can take their rightful place again so that you, our visitors, can enjoy them in person.”

Virtual or In Person School

I think In person school is better than online school because students learn better and are more concentrated. “An in-person education is extremely beneficial to students of all ages, as opposed to the virtual alternative. When physically in school, students can concentrate better because there are fewer distractions and fewer opportunities to leave the class than at home. In-person schooling results in more teacher to student time, rather than remotely submitting online assignments. Student completion rates of teacher-led classes are almost 5x higher than online learning.” This shows that students benefit from in person school than online school by the student being able to interact with the teacher instead of being on a screen. Being able to be in school makes it easier to concentrate on your work instead of having your phone and being on it and not doing any work.

“I prefer in-person classes mainly because of the more hands-on learning approach that I think in-person classes have,” Nardizzi says. “It’s much easier to be distant and detached from the course, your classmates and the professor in an online class. In-person courses hold the student accountable for remaining active and alert during class time.” This shows that being in person school it is easier to be active and alert instead of drifting off and not paying attention.

“Working with instructors and other learners in person provides opportunities for greater interaction. Talking to another person face-to-face usually provides greater clarity and understanding than communicating through texting or email. Even live chats and other types of online interaction do not offer the same level of human contact.” This shows that talking face to face is a lot easier than having to be on a screen talking. It has a lot more understanding and clarity. Online classes don't have the same human interaction as talking in person.

In conclusion, in person school has a better benefit than online class because they are more interactive. Schools should have in person school and hybrid classes instead of only online classes.
