Gender by James Doneski

Fauve and Lord of the Flies both focus exclusively on boys. As a result we can perhaps talk about men, boys and masculinity in the two texts. What do you see and how do those ideas connect to the real world?

In the beginning of the video, one boy is climbing up something and yells down to the other boy "are you too much of a sissy to climb up?" I took this as the boys think that being fearful is a girl trait which makes you seem "weak" and they're boys so in their mind, they have to be strong. In LOTF since the boys are stranded on an island their hair starts to grow out and they don't out it up or pull it back because "that's for girls". In the real life we see gender inequality everyday. For example when an adult needs help carrying something they often go "which strong boy would like to help me carry this" This is just like the boy in fauve insinuating that girls are weaker. If both stories had girl figures i think the endings would be completely different.

If the film included two girls instead of boys, the outcome would have been different. Most girls don't play games like the boys in the film did. They don't assert dominance like boys do. LOTF and Fauve connect that way. In society, men are dominant and these show that. (In Fauve, the boys were playing a game to see who would win, in LOTF they fought over who was the leader and Jack formed his own group.)

In the video, when Tyler went to go get help, and finally went back to his friend to see his friend gone, you can tell that he wanted to cry. Tyler seemed like he wanted to cry because he was breathing super heavily. However, due to the fact that he is a boy, he probably felt the need to restrain himself from crying and emotions. At the end of the story though, Tyler does end up crying, but you can tell due to his gender, he originally restrained himself from crying. This is also evident in LOTF, because a lot of the older boys restrain themselves from crying and showing there emotions. For example, Ralph tried to be tough, but by the end of the novel, Ralph cried his eyes out, and this shows that boys feel like they shouldn't cry, but eventually there is a breaking point for everyone. This is a gender expectation that was evident in both LOTF as well as the video. This gender expectation for boys to be tough and not show their emotions by crying, is also shown in real life. For example, in real life boys try to act tough by not crying, but in reality, everyone has emotions that will sometimes lead to tears.

I think both both boys didn't want to be seen as weak the way girls are. For example, when one boy hadn't climbed up the train the other boy asked if he "too sissy". Another example is when Tyler (I think that's the right name) was telling how he goes hunting with his dad and killed a squirrel. He wanted to prove he was all strong and manly. We see this in LOTF when Jack and Ralph only climb up the mountain at night to prove something and so everyone else won't think they're weak. The boys in Fauve were always trying to fool each other into being weak so they could get a point, but when it really mattered the boys didn't help each other because they thought they were joking and they didn't to be seen as tricked or weak.We still see gender inequality in the real world where lots of people think men are the strong ones and men can't cry and things like only girls show emotions.

I think that the boys were very close friends and I didn't think that they had any care for each other until Tyler cried when seeing the fox that reminded him of his dead friend that he basically accidentally killed because before that they always fought to determine who was better and who was going to win their game. This short film is very similar to LOTF because the boys could fight each other without a problem but when it came to showing their true emotions, that didn't happen much at all. So in general boys are expected to be tough and ready to fight each other and they aren't expected to show their true emotions like crying because in their eyes that shows weakness. Girls on the other hand will show their true emotions more because they are expected to more often than boys but they won't fight each other as much as the boys do because they are more refined or at least that's what they are expected to be.

You can tell the difference between the two genders in a couple different ways. One way being that the boys had more freedom because they were allowed to go out like that in the world and just explored. Girls are expected to be reformed and ladylike. We are expected to stay in the house do the cooking, cleaning and raising children. The boys seemed to have no responsibilities and were being reckless and not considering the consequences. Also, because of these expectations that us girls have, we don't roughhouse and fight like the boys typically do. These boys were always playfighting which was what lead to the consequence they had to face.
