The Cali Cartel was the Rival gang of the famous Medellin Cartel And was actually apart of it until departing from Pablo Escobar and his gang in 1988. This Cartel was located in south colombia and while Pablos gang had his cocaine distributed to Florida The cali cartel focused on New York. Shortly after leaving and the death of Pablo along with the end of the Medellin Cartel The cali Cartel would start to take over and Eventually be known as the most powerful Cartel in the 1990s And to this day have not been beaten in that statement.

The cali cartel was started when the Rodriguez orejuela Brothers and their associate Santacruz made it. The difference between this gang and the others at the time was the mens status. they came from more higher up places Which gave them the nickname "Los caballeros de cali" which translates to the gentleman of cali since The Cali Colombia was a much more successful neighborhood. Like other cartels they were ibvolved with murders and marked assassinations and the drug business. But what really started them off was the kidnapping of two Swedish diplomats in exchange for $700,000 dollars. it was said that this money helped fund and progress their way in the drug empire.

The Leaders Of Cali

There were six leaders of the Cali cartel Of those six two duos were brothers while the remaining two were there friends/associates The main leaders and the most powerful of the group would be the Rodriguez brothers. These were the main two in charge of the whole cali cartels operation system and would make sure everything went by smoothly. Their Friends Jose "Chepe" Santacruz and Helmer "Pacho" Herrea were the people who handled The cocaines international Distribution. theywould make sure all the cocaine would be exported out of colombia safely and to their destinations. It would mainly be supplied to the United states where theyhad a operation center in New york. that would eventually be seized by DEA in 1992. And lastly the two most violent out of the grouo were the Urdinola brothers and were estimated to have murdered more than 100 people in colombia themselves. They also were apart of the distribution system but Traveled to Miami Florida.

The 1990s was the peak for the cali cartel gang during this time The medellin Cartel was no more so they didnt have any competition against them at all. This meant that for them they would be the biggest Criminal empire at this time. They had also controlled over 80% Of all the cocaine in the world and were the Cause for cocaine growth in europe. The law even would go on and say how the Gang Was the most powerful criminal organization in the world. a title which still is in their names to this day.

Where the leaders are now

Currently almost all the leaders of the cali cartel arent around anymore. Both Urindola brothers went on a formed a cartel of their own which failed and they soon died. Pacho Herrera was sent to prison where he was seemingly getting his life back together but then was later killed in prison. Jose Santacruz would be caught by police in a trap that was setup and was planned for him and this would be the end for him as they would kill him. Gilberto of the Rodriguez brothers has actually died recently In 2022 the cause of death was lymphoma. he died at a prison medical center in north carolina at the age of 83. And lastly Miguel rodriguez is the only one alive of all six leaders. He is currently in prison doing a 30 year sentence at the FCI loretto in Pensylvania. He also has a release date of july 15th 2028.
