As we look into Poe's stories, we can read them as if we become the character, watch through a looking glass, or sit and listen to a character. In both "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Cask of Amontillado." In the Rue, we read in third person as we witness the tragedy a gorilla caused, a loss of a life. "We first met while trying to find the same book. As it was a book which few had ever heard of, this chance brought us together in an old bookstore. Later, we met again in the same store. Then again, in another bookstore. Soon we began to talk. I was deeply interested in the family history he told me," explains the meeting of Dupin and our main character, the detective, in their first meeting, and compares them to how they now have a similar idea of solving murders. Our main detective works in a brilliant way to find the most surprising murders. This detective works in a certain area of ideas and complex way to find the murderous gorilla. In The Cask of Amontillado, we listen to his mind plan out the murder in his thoughts. He follows a series of events leading to the murder. Letting his victim feel impressionable and smart. These stories follow a path of murder and intelligence.

Differences between "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue"

Both of these short stories differ in plot, theme, and style. "The Cask of Amontillado" is all about the revenge that Montresor has planned to punish Fortunato for his rude comments. There is an ironic tone when it comes to the theme of revenge, pride, and deception. The setting also takes place in the catacombs during a carnival season, adding to the eerie feeling. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is considered to be a detective story. It is centered around the investigation of a brutal murder in Paris, which soon introduces the amateur detective, who has great knowledge in solving crimes. The first story is all about revenge, while the other story is mainly focused on solving crimes and figuring out the puzzle.

The process of Murder

The murder is driven by Montresor's long-anticipated resentment and desire for revenge against Fortunato. His thought process is cold and calculated, focusing on luring Fortunato into the catacombs by promising wine. He feels he has been insulted and therefore seeks to punish Fortunato in a way that makes him understand the consequences of his actions. The murder is personal and born out of a need for justice. In "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," The thought process behind the killings was simply animalistic. The orangutan didn't have any rational or moral understanding of its actions. The orangutan is only mimicking the raw behavior and untamed strength with a human-like intent.

He buried a man alive, and that makes him a criminal now, and nobody knows who kidnapped him. She hides from the public as well as the narrator.

We dive deep into the information of the mind of a killer. The psychological information we receive about the killers in this story. In the story of The Cask of Amontillado, we discover his manipulative tactics to learn his victim to death. He makes his victim believe he is smarter than he is to distract him from any signs of his plan. We also learn how dark his mind is to complete the killing. In Poe's dark and weird story of The Murders in the Rue Morgue, the detective helps us learn the minds of the gorilla's owners, leading the victim to his death. We learn the reasons why they would lead him to death and how betrayal can lead the minds of psychopaths to harmful situations. In both of these stories, we dive into the minds of the murderers from different views.

Even though they are both based on murder, they're extremely different. For example, in "The Cask of Amontillado", the murder is more focused on a personal, calculated revenge, while the Rue Morgue murders were committed by a non-human creature.
