I am thinking about the lines of communication with family and the recommendations for streamlining that process. At the secondary level, there are several adults who can and should be communicating with families and with each other. During distance learning especially, we need to think about our processes so that there is a consistent approach and families are supported without being overwhelmed.

When I think of anti-racism and authentic partnership together, I think about checking assumptions. We give each other grace as colleagues by assuming best intentions, but those ideas also need to be extended to students and families in order to really see and understand one another.

For me this will look like including parents in the discussion of what their student needs and what works best for them. It means moving away from traditional teaching styles and incorporating oral language in the forms of story telling, games, debates, etc. It is using data to identify gaps in my instruction, which parts of a lesson were effective for all students and which weren't. As an anti-racist educator, I need to think about the policies and systems in place that are silencing and erasing our students' and their families' voices and histories. I am so intrigued by the articles I've read in this unit. It's an exciting time to be an educator. I just wish the district would have given us more time to study/discover all this before the kids come back. It's all great but it's so much while planning and designing what we will actually do with students.

I think they are synonymous in some ways. I think being anti-racist means having the courage to engage authentically with those one might not have in the past. Take a walk, share some dinner, text and talk with someone you might not have in the past. It's only when we have these experiences that we learn to accept and that we are all so much more similar than we are different.

I'm continually reflecting: I often pride myself on how much connection I have with students and their families but when I look at the connections (literally observe) I am beginning to realize that many of these connections have historically been with students and families who look a lot like I do. It's challenging for me to connect with many families at our site especially those who speak a language other than English as their first language. I don't speak another language (I have conversational Spanish in the most limited capacity) - but I'm eager to continue developing partnerships and relationships with as many students and families as I can. I just have to remember that there is no gold star at the end of this journey and in fact there is no end to the journey. I can slowly increase my ability to connect.

I'd like to celebrate the administrative leadership at JLMS as the schedule we have created that allows us (the teachers) the time to not only prepare our lessons but also to reach out and make the necessary connections with the home and the community to better build our partnerships. The asynchronous learning periods allow me the time I need to respond to student work in a meaningful way and to exchange ideas and information quickly and effectively.

What comes to mind with anti-racism is understanding and being aware of my own biases and how that affects teaching my students, especially when thinking about race. For authentic partnership, I think about how a family is a student's first teacher, and my role is to connect with those families to understand each student's identity and how learning personally relates to them.

I feel like it is very important to have genuine connections with the families of the kids that you are teaching during the school year. The families need to believe that you are 100% invested in their childs' education and future, which can inspire them to support their child even more at home.

I'm thinking about how important, and potentially different/unfamiliar it is for some, to shift our planning practices. Rather than precise and extensive lesson/unit planning, this is about being able to reflect and adjust constantly based on student and family input. The constant adjusting teachers have to do is critical in ensuring partnerships are authentic.

I think I need to think of families as partners and look for their input and to truly make a connection with them.

I think that building authentic partnerships with families of color is an important part of anti-racism in schools because many aspects of our schools are based in white culture, and families of color often don't feel welcomed or comfortable reaching out to school staff. School staff reaching out to families and doing our part to make sure we're listening to them and learning from them will help with this.
