There are many ways that one can refuse, negotiate, and collaborate to enhance one self's health. Let's start with refusal. Refusing or denying an act can be difficult. It may be even harder when your friends are trying to convince you to do something. One effective way to refuse something is to assertively say "no". Having the ability to negotiate is extremely important. It allows people to resolve conflicts or disagreements. There are stages of negotiation: Preparation, Discussion, Clarification of Goals, Negotiate Towards a Win-Win Outcome, Agreement, and finally Implementation of Course of Action. For one to prepare for negotiation, one must set a limited timeframe so the discussion does not trail off. During the discussion, both parties should tell their side of the story and both parties should listen. Both parties should clarify their goals and order them into highest and lowest priority. When negotiating, one should always try to make the outcome a win-win so both people are pleased. Next, a clear agreement should be made and everyone involved should have an open mind. Finally, after the agreement is made, the implementation of the negotiation should occur.

When my dad was in college, his roommate's friend (who was also his friend) offered my dad some drugs. This was not the first time someone has offered my father a substance that would impair him; it has happened with alcohol too. Both times my father assertively said no to the substances. The refusal in college was easier because he knew that he was in college to learn and to get a degree for later on in life. If he messed up college, his life and everything that he worked so hard for could have been ruined. My dad said that he broke his friendship with the drug persuader and that he found new friends that were good influences on him. If my dad had made that decision to take the drugs, he would have potentially gotten addicted to them. He would not have married my mother and I would have never been born.
