A stroke, often referred as apoplexy are a result of a substantial reduction in blood flow to a particular area of the brain or intracranial bleeding, which prevents blood and oxygen from entering the brain (Britannica). There are two different categories of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes make up 87% of strokes; it occurs when the blood flow of the artery which supplies oxygenated blood becomes blocked. Majority of the time this is due to blockages. Hemorrhagic strokes happen when an artery in the brain suffers a rupture or leaks blood. The blood then applies too much pressure to the brain which in turn results in damages. High blood pressure is an instance that causes a hemorrhagic stroke (CDV Gov).

Hypertension or high blood pressure: High blood pressure is the most common cause of strokes. Hypertension will place your arteries under constant stress. A comparison would be a tire which has been over-pumped. When too much force occurs inside of the blood vessels it damages and weakens the artery walls which increases the possibility of blockage. This can cause ischemic strokes, and less commonly hemorrhagic strokes.

2. Tobacco: Consuming tobacco, either through ingestion or smoking will raise the odds of a stroke. The risks are inclusive to second-hand smoke, in which individuals inhale smoke from the burning end of a cigarette. This smoke from cigarettes results in a fatty buildup in your main neck artery which will thicken the blood and make it more likely to clog.

3. Diabetes: Often high blood pressure and the likelihood of being overweight are accompanied by diabetes. This is since being overweight will double your chances of having high blood pressure. A direct example would be the change in metabolism resulting from being overweight. This change will affect the production of lipids, leading in excess production of these lipids, high cholesterol, and elevated blood glucose. When this process occurs it damages the blood vessels of the brain and the heart which leads to blood clots, often referred to as the formation of stroke.

Always call 9-1-1 first if someone is having a stroke. Do not let someone drive you to an ER you should wait for medical attention to arrive. Medical treatment starts right away on the ride to the hospital. You may be given a type of medicine called thrombolytic which is a clot-busting drug. Surgery may be needed to stop blood and save brain tissue. If surgery is needed, then a metal clip will be put to stop the blood loss. After a stroke, you may need to recover your muscles. Physical exercise may be needed after you recover from the hospital.
