Dogs are already used in search and rescue teams throughout the world. The are have a really high endurance, they have an amazing sense of smell (their brain dedicates 40 times more space to scent than ours), and they can hear up to four times better than us humans. This makes them extremely valuable in search and rescue squads!

How can we use a dog's senses?

Dogs already are better than most people. We just got to use what they can already do. One way to do this would be outfit firefighter's gas mask with some sort of enhanced smelling system to use in search and rescue operations. This could be used in avalanches, in floods, and in rubble to find people that are trapped or deceased. We could also outfit the firefighters helmet with some manner of hearing amplifier in order to give firefighters a great way to find trapped survivors. Finally, a dog's four legs often make them so much better at climbing than a normal person which is often very useful when exploring debris that are unsteady to being with. Using their four is actually already being studied in robots today!

What the final design looks would be a metal detector type device. But instead, it is detecting sounds! A firefighter will use this device in rubble or on snow slopes by waving back to forth but will be listening for a survivor making noise. This will be more cost effective than training canine units (but less cute!) as a device would be able to potentially last longer than a canine unit.
