Motivation is the reason for people's actions, willingness and goals. Motivation is derived from the word motive which is defined as a need that requires satisfaction. These needs could also be wants or desires that are acquired through influence of culture, society, lifestyle, etc. or generally innate.

Without motivation community learning would be strenuous or impossible. To have effective communities the motivation for participation should be investigated and this should form part of the building blocks for Learning. Collaborative learning is achieved when all participants are motivated and invested in the process and contribute.
