Under religious backgrounds, witch's were seen as a threat to society. Most who were accused were killed during tests such as the float test. During a time of social tensity and the rise of cold war, the event of being accused as a communist would ruin one's life. This relates to the events of the Salem witch trials where many lives were lost to simple and unsupported reasons.
