The Aztecs fled to the south, where they became mercenaries for the city-state of Culhuacán. The Aztecs worked as mercenaries to the Culuhas when they moved in to the south. But that all came to an end when they sacrificed the chief's daughter. The Culuhas forced them onto an island in the waters of Lake Texcoco. As the aztecs grew, the city of Tenochtitlan grew very big. It had a large ceremonial plaza. Inside  the plaza, a large stone pyramid called the great temple loomed 150 feet above the onlookers. Just outside the plaza stood the royal palace.

The Aztecs reclaimed land from the lake by sinking timbers into the water to serve as walls. They also boasted things like the aqueducts that carried fresh water for irrigation.

Once a city was conquered, it had to pledge to honor their gods and obedience to the Aztec king. They also had to honor the god Huitzilopochtli.

Because collecting tribute was the empire's most important job, they thrived on the resources of the other city-states. Also, because they kept on conquering, their resources grew.  When they conquered a city-state, the gained additional territory, laborers, and sacrificial victims.
