Quizlet Debuts Study Feature That Helps Students Study Efficiently

Let’s face it: Most students don’t want to study more than they have to. As a result, many exhibit poor study habits, like cramming the night before (or the class before) a test, or blindly reviewing class notes. To help students kick bad study habits, Quizlet has added a new feature to its free app that enables them to study more efficiently and effectively using machine learning and cognitive science.

Unveiled onstage at the SXSWedu conference taking place this week in Austin, Quizlet Learn takes the guesswork out of studying by giving students an adaptive study plan that tracks progress and helps them stay motivated with checkpoints and study reminders.

How to use it: After launching Learn, students go through a quick review of study materials to see where they need to start. Next, it asks to input a test date, if one is coming up. Learn uses that information to build an individualized plan. As students study, it recognizes patterns, adjusting questions to be easier or harder and incorporating an array question types (i.e. flashcards, true/false, multiple choice, written and more) to keep them engaged. Learn updates the student on their progress and sends alerts on their mobile devices.

How it works: CEO Matthew Glotzbach in a blog post announcement said that under the hood, Learn is powered by machine learning. To create Learn, the company's Learning Assistant Platform analyzed millions of anonymous study sessions to gain insight into how Quizlet students effectively mastered subjects in the past. That data combined with proven techniques from cognitive science, like spaced repetition, enable Quizlet Learn to show students materials only “as often as needed to master it,” Glotzbach explained.

Shane Mooney, a Quizlet data scientist, wrote in a Medium blog post that spaced repetition involves spreading study over a long period of time and reviewing terms with longer and longer delays each time. “By using machine learning to build a predictive model informed by the same cognitive science theories behind spaced repetition, we were able to build an algorithm that makes studying efficient and practical for all our users,” Mooney said in the post. (He details technical aspects of the Learning Assistant Platform in much greater detail on Medium.)

Quizlet Learn is expected to benefit tens of millions of K–12, college and lifelong learners in 130 countries worldwide, according to information from the company. The feature is only available on iOS for now, but the Quizlet will be rolling out Android and web versions soon.

posted by Aina (IDI16-01-081)
Reference
Ravipati, S.

1. Quizlet reads the word and definition to the student out loud, enhancing students’ grasp of pronunciation. Quizlet has text-to-speech capabilities in eighteen languages as of 2013, and more are on the way. Granted, the pronunciation is not always perfect or unambiguous—for example, some English words like “conduct” have both noun and verb forms which are pronounced with different syllable stress patterns, and Quizlet would haven no way of knowing which part of speech to pronounce unless the word is used in a sentence—but as a general studying aid, this feature is invaluable.
2. Quizlet provides targeted spelling feedback. In the “Speller” studying mode, students hear the target word spoken out loud and see a written definition on the screen. Their task is to type the target word using its correct spelling. If they make mistakes, Quizlet visually corrects the error, re-reads the word, and reads the spelling one letter at a time. For students who particularly struggle with spelling, such as Arabic-speaking learners of English (Martin, 2011), this specific, multi-modal feedback is a wonderful resource.
3. Quizlet provides adaptive training to help students focus on the items most difficult for them. In the “Learn” mode, Quizlet tests students one item at a time. The items a student performs more poorly on are brought back for further review to help students focus their efforts on items which they have not yet learned or which are more difficult to remember. This adaptive training method increases the efficiency and effectiveness of students’ studying.

4. You can create a “class” for your students on Quizlet and even track their progress if you choose to do so. Personally, I view Quizlet as being purely automated formative assessment: I don’t keep track of my students or grade them in any way based on their Quizlet studying. However, features for creating a class and tracking student progress do exist for teachers who wish to integrate Quizlet more fully into their curriculum.

posted by Aina (IDI16-01-081)
Reference
Price, B. No problem. Quizlet has a built-in method for printing out your cards for off-road access to review.
3. Embed your review anywhere: Once available only for the vocab review games, embed code is everywhere on Quizlet now. Want your cards to display on your Moodle course, a practice test on your website, a game of Scatter on your wiki? Grab the embed code and display your set almost any place on the web.

4. Audio in English … and 17 other languages!: Whether you are using Quizlet to teach foreign languages or just looking to engage another learning style, audio is a powerful tool, and audio is now included by default whenever terms or definitions are typed into the tool. The “computer voice” is rather good – you can try it out on the set embedded below. Just toggle the “Enable Audio” button.
5. Live discussion right on the page: Each flashcard set gives you the ability to set up a chat window if you wish. The chats live forever, though each student does retain the ability to delete his or her own comments. While not an amazingly innovative feature, it does open up a place where students can leave feedback on the set, correcting errors that might have escaped a teacher’s notice or suggesting terms that might be added to the set.
For more info, you can visit: http://www.drewmcallister.net/blog/2012/04/5-more-reasons-to-use-quizlet/

posted by Aina(IDI16-01-081)
Reference
McAllister, D.
Classroom Game Idea: Hide and Seek Vocab with Quizlet

Do you know by you can also play hide and seek with Quizlet? Interesting right?

So, here's the thing ! I'm gonna tell you how it works.

This variation on Hide and Seek is a great no-prep game for any class, but it's especially wonderful for language classes working on pronunciation!

How to play the game?

Divide the class in half randomly and write their names on the board under the headings "HIDE" and "SEEK" (in your language).

The first pair sends their "seeker" into the hall for 20 seconds while the "hider" hides a piece of brightly colored paper somewhere in the room.

I project the word for the whole class to see using Quizlet Flashcards.

The "hider" opens the door for the "seeker" to return and the whole class chants the word on the board. We chant more loudly as s/he gets closer to the hiding spot. To avoid screaming and bothering other classes, we wave our hands in the air when s/he is really close.

When the student finds the word, s/he must tell us the definition.

A few management tips

Suggested rules for hiding the paper: It must be hidden in the perimeter of the room, but not in anyone's personal belongings; my desk is off limits; it has to be a little bit visible, but you may fold it; it has to be reachable by the "seeker," so unless they are really tall, be considerate!

If it's a really large class and everyone wants a turn, I set the timer on my phone for 1:15. If the "seeker" hasn't found it by the time the buzzer goes off, the "hider" gets to show him/her where it was.

I let my students know the purpose of this game is to practice pronunciation and everyone must chant together in rhythm so we hear it accurately.

If I hear students repeatedly mispronouncing a word, or speeding up too much, I use the audio feature on the Quizlet flashcards to get them back on track. I just click it three times in a row to redirect them.

posted by Afrina (IDI16-01-080)
Reference
Amalia (2018).
WAYS QUIZLET.com CAN SUPERCHARGE YOUR TEACHING

Now that we’ve covered the basics, here are eleven specific ways in which Quizlet can help your students robustly acquire and remember class material. Because I am a language teacher, I will focus on vocabulary, but the same principles can apply to most subjects.
4. Quizlet generates customizable randomized tests for your students to boost their long-term memory. Quizlet can generate tests involving written, matching, multiple choice, or true/false questions, or any combination thereof. The tests may be taken on a computer or smartphone and automatically graded, or they may be printed out and distributed in class. This is useful for students’ self-assessment, but the actual learning benefits of this activity cannot be overstated. Self-testing is critical in building robust long-term memory of learned materials (Karpicke & Roediger, 2008), so the more your students test themselves, the better their performance will be in the future.
5. Quizlet generates interactive games to help students study your course content. The “Scatter” and “Space Race” games use the word/definition pairs you entered to help your students study in a more interactive and competitive fashion. Students can compete in teams against one another to see which group can complete a Scatter game the fastest or which group can keep up a Space Race the longest. Check out the Scatter game below! (If it doesn’t load in your RSS reader, click here to open the Scatter game in your web browser.)

Post by: Aimanyassier
Reference

If you teach a world language, you have undoubtedly heard about Quizlet. Quizlet.com is essentially a web based vocabulary learning tool that uses word banks mingled with a variety of games for students.
In the past few years, Quizlet has considerably improved its website, provided applications for Android and Apple phones, and allowed teachers to create class sets or use public sets created by other teachers.
But the exciting development of Quizlet is the new QUIZLET Live! For those of you who are familiar with Kahoot, you know how competitive students get with game-based learning platforms. With Quizlet live, you get a similar platform, but with a really fun twist.

First, you will need to go to https://quizlet.com/features/live. There is a tutorial if you care to watch it, but the setup is really easy. The first step is to choose a set (I do not create my own sets, I usually look up a set that another teacher has made by typing in the name of the textbook I use and the chapter, for example with ”D’accord 1, 1A).

Post by: Aimanyassier
Reference:

Quizlet is an online learning tool that allows you to create digital flashcards that can be studied from the website or using an app. I had heard about this app from students and decided to try it this past summer as I was studying for my own finals in graduate school. The experience of using it myself to learn material made me realize how valuable this could be especially in my Advanced Placement classes where vocabulary retention is critical. So far it’s been a success! I’ve seen an improvement in vocabulary fluency amongst my students and while it’s still a little early to tell I think the overall content retention is going to be improved.

Here are some of my favorite features.

Accessibility

Once the study set is added to a student’s account or class the Quizlet App allows students to practice vocabulary terms without being connected to a Wi-Fi network or using data. The convenience factor of being able to use the digital flashcards on a device that we already have with us was what originally drew me to the platform.

Tracking Function

The Quizlet Teacher subscription allows me to track student activity in two ways that I have found beneficial.

First, it allows me to see which of the tools the students have utilized and the last time they were active with the site. I’ve found this helpful when counseling with students about study practices and assessment grades.
Second, is the class progress tab which shows me the class average of correct responses for each term. It ranks the words from the most to least missed by students. This function has allowed me to focus class time on clarifying words where there is confusion instead of doing broader review.

Quizlet Live

Quizlet Live is a review game that students can play in class by entering a code on their phones. It groups students and focuses on accuracy over speed to win. I tried it with one of my classes and found it required very little effort to set up and the students were engaged and excited during the game.

I would recommend this tool for teachers of particularly vocabulary driven course or courses where there is a fair amount of memorization required. My students are spending more time with the vocabulary terms and their improved fluency is measurable. For me, the Quizlet Teacher subscription has been worth it for access to the student data and the ease of creating vocabulary quizzes.

Post by: Aimanyassier
