Berlin – locomotion on the streets

• S-Bahn (Stadtschnellbahn, or rapid railway): suburban rail network that connects the central Berlin with the surrounding suburbs.

That there are no ticket barriers at stations in Berlin, so you can board trains and buses without showing a ticket. It’s an honesty based system, in which you need to validate your ticket once on board. Ticket checks are fairly common, albeit random, and the fine is high for fare-skippers.

But since Berlin is a flat city with no hills, walking or cycling is always a good alternativa.

Built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham, the building was acquired by King George III in 1762 to be used as a private residence. Since its construction, it has been extended and remodelled on several occasions.

During the two world wars, the palace survived in exemplary fashion. In the First World War it was lucky not to be attacked, but during the Second World War it was bombed on several occasions. The most important bombing destroyed the royal chapel in 1940.

The history of Budapest begins with Obuda, which was occupied by Celtic tribes until the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC. Under the name of "Aquincum" was found in 89 AC,over a Celtic settlement and served as the capital of the Roman region of Pannonia for four centuries. The name Aquincum comes from “aqua”, referring to the thermal springs that are characteristic of the city.

Buda was born as a Roman colony and its foundation was established in the year 14 BC.
