The Guardian

What type of paper is it? This type of newspaper uses formal language and uses pictures on its articles showing the story.

What parts or section does it contain?

The guardian contains sections like politics, international news, mostly political news. Such as an MP has been deselected from office ect.

What is the front page like?

Unlike papers like the sun where they use celebrity news stores and big eye catching colours. The guardian is more focused around more important, intellectual topics like political elections, war stories, financial markets the economy and so forth.

What are the main characteristics of the typeface and layout?

Basic form, prim and proper, no nonsense.

Do you notice anything about the way photographs and illustrations are used?

Say if a reader is busy and on the move and they wanted to get an idea of the article in a hurry they can just read the headline, look at the picture and get a basic idea of what the story is about.

What are the types of products advertised? What does this tell us about the readership and possible target audience of these papers?

I saw an advertisement for a thing called Guardianholidays, advertising a trip to rajasthan & amritsars golden temple. Details - 14 nights from £1,599. This tells me or implies at least that the readership of the guardian is middle-class people.

The journalist tells the reader what they want to hear in a quick straight to the point answer.

Advertising - Slimming products for women, advertising free membership and a pullout magazine guide.

Formatting and columns - They use their space well, fitting different articles into little spaces around a larger more emphasised story.

Typical mainstream tabloid journalism, celeb stories, gossip etc. Their target audience is the general public that don't want endless streams of political analysis or a professors views on the Eurozone.

films - Black hawk down - genre - war

Black hawk down is a non fictional story about the botched American led operation to hunt down and eliminate a warlord in Mogadishu, Somalia and bring aid and food to the starving local population suppressed by the corrupt government. Using Black hawk helicopters to lower the american troops at the drop zones, an unexpected attack by Somalian forces brings two of the black hawk helicopters down immediately. From there on American forces struggle to fend off attacking forces, regrouping whilst under heavy fire.

The genre as you can guess is predominately a male audience due to its war like content. This is one example of things that men particulary take an interest in. Age groups between 14-45 years of age.
