Chapter 5 Summary

Urie Bronfenbrenner developed the basic ecological approach of human development. This ecological approach consists of four ecosystems. This includes Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, and Macrosystem. The Microsystem is the smallest most intimate level that includes immediate family and friends, and school. This extends into the Mesosystem that includes extended family and peer groups. The next largest is the Exosystem that extends into the community. The largest is the Macrosystem that extends into culture and the nation. One important aspect to remember is how the media effects children in a wide variety and have a great influence on our society. All of these have to do with the child's environment and the social influences around them. The chapter presents a story about a 15 year old girl named Naomi who gets into trouble by threatening another girl with a knife. The first thing they want to check is the home and the environment that Naomi is surrounded by. We learn that her parents are very involved with Naomi's life and lived in a good environment. It turns out that Naomi attacked a girl who is dating her ex-boyfriend and she said she felt pressured by her friends to do so. This case explains the ecological theory and how environment and the people around us influence us greatly. The chapter goes on to discuss which systems effected Naomi the most and how it is relevant to her story. Social media was also a trigger in this situation because it became a greater influence for Naomi to retaliate when she felt disrespected. The ecological approach has three elements that were highlighted in this chapter. This includes, the influence of children and social contexts, these social contexts are viewed as direct or indirect, and that these contexts are organized in a systemic function (Gavazzi, 2011).
