Principles of Forest school

Overtime the ethos of forest school has developed principles in which they follow and believe, according to The Forest School Association one of the key principle of Forest school is that there is a equal balance of adult-led and child initiated play and learning involved. The adult is required in order to teach them how to use the equipment and help them create boundaries and rules; it will have an element of child initiated because the children then use what they have been taught and experiment within the boundaries therefore creating an environment in which they they have the ability to take risks and gain awareness of danger and ways of preventing this danger from actually happening.
Another key principles of forest school is that Forest School session is a long term process which consists of the regular sessions in a woodland or a natural environment, forest school should take place at least every other week with the same group in order to have sufficient planning which would would be appropriate for the ability of the group; the key to successful session is by observing and reviewing the progression of the children before implementing further
The reason these sessions are held in an outdoor environment is i order to develop a strong relationship between the child and the world around them. This is an environment in which they are able to explore the space and habitat and gain a better understand of the outside environment. Forest School provides the children with natural resources creating the child to have the ability to find differently and "out the box" and be able to have a diverse mindset.
The aim of forest school is to have considerable impact on the holistic development of a child , this is in order to develop a resilient mindset and enables to child to becomes more independent therefore less reliant on reassurance from an adult.

The photo below shows an example of risk taking and the ways in which children explore boundaries.

The Benefits of Forest School

Forest School is extremely common as part as the early year curriculum, this is because it benefits the holistic development and the numerous benefits on the child.
The confidence of a child will be hugely impacted because the freedom and space allows the child to attempt trial and error; this would boost their self-esteem when they succeed. If a child is more of a practical learner they will have increased confidence if they are more successful outside rather than in an classroom.
An increased confidence may result in increased social skills and improved communication; this is because the children will be working in a group therefore negotiating and listening to one another's ideas. Communication will also be benefited because the outdoor experience will introduce new vocabulary and will know how to express their needs in both a verbal and non verbal way.

Due to the environment and the activities that are completed in forest school the child require high levels of concentration, this is developed through forest school and is usually developed fairly quickly because the child very is interested therefore more likely to increase their attention span. This concentration will impact on the child in the classroom because they will attempt to relate to the outdoor environment
