To me, Grendel would look like....

I imagine Grendel looking like a regular furry monster but he wouldn't have a scary look to him. People would think he's scary because of the murders he commits, he doesn't feel guilt in killing people, and the people who live in the kingdom never know when he is going to strike again. In the text it states, "The monster’s thoughts were as quick as his greed or his claws he slipped through the door and there in the silence snatched up thirty men, smashed them unknowing in their beds and ran out with their bodies, the blood dripping behind him,." This quote was one of the only real clues to describing Grendel's appearance. You never see once in the text where the people said that his appearance frightened them or made them have nightmares. I honestly don't think Grendel had to be a monster and people would have accepted him into the kingdom eventually. He could have used his appearance to make the people feel safe but he used his size and his sharp claws in an evil way. No one makes you a certain way , you choose the life for yourself and the actions of others shouldn't affect you in any way. Overall message is Grendel didn't have to be a monster and he was just like any other creature on earth and he had the outward appeal, but he chose to let revenge and pain take over the positive outcomes that could have come to him.

A Classmates view

I choose Elijah Bowers from your 6th period class because it made me view Grendel in a different way. It made me realize your point you made in today's class where everyone views things differently because we have all been in different situations. I choose to see Grendel as a character who was meant to be harmless and cause no disturbance, while Elijah portrayed Grendel in more of a human form. When I first read his it made me question how he came up with his conclusion of Grendel but I probably won't ever truly know because I have never walked in his shoes. I think Grendel became our own monsters or who we wanted to fear. Grendel isn't defined as an image thats why there are so many different images.

I think Grendel would listen to Coldplay. The songs by Coldplay are mainly songs about struggle. Some of Coldplay's songs are about love but some are about personal issues. Coldplay really helps guide you and many people can relate to lyrics that Coldplay writes. I think Grendel would most enjoy the song "Fix You". This song is about losing someone who you truly love and in Grendel's case it was his father. "When the tears come streaming down your face, When you lose something you can't replace, When you love someone but it goes to wasteCould it be worse?", These lyrics would relate to Grendel because he lost his father and his father was the one who kept him going. When he lost him, Grendel lost someone he couldn't replace. My heart aches for Grendel and I can't imagine what he must have been feeling in this time of complete and utter darkness but death helped him cope and the lives he took made him die himself.

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/06/02/slaying-monsters

I used the article you checked off on in class and i received a heart on my assignment. I loved this article and it really made me interested in knowing more about Beowulf. The author describes everything in such descriptive detail. The author of course had studied Beowulf for many years so that's why the article was so astonishing. If you learn to become involved in something for many years you begin to know it like the back of your hand. The article was long but it kept me interested. Overall I think I enjoyed the article. I would also say it wasn't as boring as I expected it to be either. When you see something is 16 pages long you think oh god like this is going to kill me. In the end Beowulf is actually very interesting and I'm glad I got to read the article.
