In the early 1900's, homosexuality gained attention increasingly. In 1951, the Mattachite Society was formed by Harry Hay and is considered to be the first national gay rights organization. This organization is what is thought to have sparked the gay rights movement. More and more organizations were established and soon society started to realize that gay people's rights were not defined yet. As gay individuals realized this, they felt that they needed to start to fight for their rights. As people around gay individuals found out about gay individuals' sexual orientation, some accepted them as they were but some did not accept. Gays and lesbians were discriminated against in the workforce and other public places. They were considered sometimes in some places to be "mentally ill." Gay individuals soon realized, after this discrimination, that they were being treated without their so-called "rights." It was true that they had rights as humans, but their orientation, according to the government, had not yet defined and specified their rights as gay individuals.

In 1969, police raided a gay club and the raid turned into a riot. The people in the club, gay people and supporters, rioted against the police. The police's initial intention to raid was because the bar was selling without a license (Gay clubs and bars had been targeted to be shut down). Police arrested some employees and even some gay customers. People were watching this unfold outside and began to protest in support of the arrested individuals. This is known as the Stonewall Riot, the first major protest in support of Gay Rights.

The Chicano movement aimed for three main goalsto restore land, establish rights for farm workers, and to create education reforms. In that time, farm workers made little money to live off of even though they worked extremely hard. In addition, Hispanic children who went to school were segregated just like African American children and this was justified under the "separate but equal" ruling.

In 1955, Rosa Parks sat on a white section of a bus and refused to move when asked. This was her way of protesting against the inequality of white supremacy and black oppression. This event caught the attention of the public; many African American individuals saw this as a motivation to protest for their own rights and to act immediately.
