Reflection Entry (1) SDG 12 : Responsible Consumption and Production Saturday, 30th March 2024

SDG 12 stands for Sustainable Development Goal 12, one of the 17 objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that were set forth by the UN in 2015. A key component of SDG 12 is "Responsible Consumption and Production." Globally sustainable patterns of production and consumption are the purpose of the goal. It covers topics including waste management, pollution control, resource efficiency, and encouraging sustainable lifestyles. Intending to advocate more economical resource usage and lessen adverse effects on the environment and public health, SDG 12 highlights the need to differentiate economic progress from environmental deterioration.

In May 2022, my family and I had a picnic on a beach in Cherating, Pahang. Unfortunately, our picnic was interrupted because the beach was polluted with garbage, which made us not want to picnic there. There is a lot of durian skin waste, polystyrene, mineral bottles, food waste, and barbecue burning waste. This is because of the irresponsible attitude of tourists or residents. It has not been mentioned about the condition of the seawater, which is full of oil spills, plastic piled up, and even worse, affecting marine life. Small fish are dying along the coast, which also results in smell pollution. Sad to see things like this left behind. I immediately invited the family to try their best to gather visible trash and sort it into plastic trash, which will help reduce the amount of pollution and waste disposal in the area. We didn't want the area to be filled with trash that might eventually cause an outbreak of disease, or residual rainwater in stagnant containers that would likely lead to the dengue virus breeding. We also forgot to have a picnic, but the state of the dirty beach was more important. We spent two hours picking up trash, and once we were done, the beach area looked very clean and free of trash without any visible or dispersed waste. We are content with our devotion to this beach. trash garbage that we separate at PT Trash Recycling Industry, such as plastic, bottles, glass, chicken bone waste, and food, must be disposed of correctly.

Ultimately, clearing the beach of trash not only helps to address current environmental issues but also supports larger initiatives to attain sustainable patterns of production and consumption as specified by SDG 12 regarding production and consumption. Involvement in beach clean-ups offers a concrete approach to positively influence the environment. It may be very satisfying and inspiring to see the instant benefits of our work, such as better marine ecosystems and cleaner shorelines. In my opinion, participating in beach clean-ups motivates everyone, including myself, to take additional steps towards environmental preservation. These encounters work as stimulants for continued action and contribution, whether via advocacy, revisions to a sustainable lifestyle, or ongoing involvement in cleanup efforts. Beaches are fantastic locations for families to explore and enjoy, but when they are littered, these wild areas are put in danger. This is why I believe it is so important to maintain the cleanliness of our local beaches so that everyone, locals and visitors alike, may delight in the beauty of our beaches. Nevertheless, litter can be hazardous as opposed to being a sight. If someone isn't careful, glass and metal pieces that can easily be hidden in the sand might injure them.

The goal of Sustainable Development Goal 12, or SDG 12, is to guarantee sustainable patterns of production and consumption. It encompasses topics like conserving resources, managing waste, cutting down on pollution, and promoting sustainable development in general. Therefore, cleaning up waste at the beach relates to the goal's general goals in an array of ways.

Reflection Entry (2) SDG 3 : Well-being and Good Health, 31st May 2024

SDG 3: Well-being and Good Health. This goal includes animal health as well, even though it is largely focused on human health, especially in relation to zoonotic diseases. Serious diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. By safeguarding the health and welfare of animals, such as by providing veterinary treatment and cat rescue, one can lower the likelihood of disease. I live in a congested suburb. We have an increasing number of street cats and dogs in our region, as I have seen for years. Although they had a certain allure, the growing number of them also presented difficulties, possible health hazards, and the sight of numerous sick and injured cats and dogs. I made the decision to act after being inspired by sustainable development goal number three, which is "good health and well-being." I decided to approach a community-based street cat rescue and care programme known as Kuantan Animal Rescue & Education (KARE), a local animal welfare charity. By addressing the underlying causes of the street cat and dog problem, my goal was to improve the well-being of our human neighbours as well as the cats and dogs. Fast forward: the neighbourhood’s approach to the problem of stray cats has been revolutionary, greatly enhancing the health and wellbeing of both residents and animals. Notably, our initiatives, which were in line with SDG 3, decreased the number of cats with untreated illnesses and overnight disturbances. To promote collective responsibility, we increased the public's understanding of humane animal management and responsible pet ownership. Engaging together to achieve a common objective, the project enhanced community ties and promoted personal fulfilment among neighbours. Meanwhile Establishing long-term cat care programmes guaranteed sustainability and served as an inspiration for similar projects in neighbouring communities. Additionally, it improved ties among the community as neighbours cooperated to accomplish a common objective.
