How do writers use BOTH an inner voice and spoken voice to effectively represent a character or a person's identity?

Working in groups - write a generalization to finish the sentence: "We understand that… "

Make sure to include the names of your group members in your post.

We understand that authors utilize an inner voice to indicate how a character perceives a situation and what they are thinking. They use a spoken voice to convey what they are comfortable saying out loud. It demonstrates how much of their identity the character is willing to share and how much control they have over their words.

The main idea in the excerpt from The Absolutely true diary of a part time Indian, is the idea of diversity within unity, in this case on the personal level. Junior feels different parts of his identity. His native identity, and his more "secular" (not the right word) identity. However, to him, these 2 sides are united under 1 flag: Him. No matter how many sides of identity he has, there will always be one "him". Others don't have the perspective to see the flag. They aren't able to realize that there is really just one Junior/Arnold. To them he is two people, and when you are being pulled apart in two directions, it causes strain on the personal level.
