Every corner around the world is truly unique. Even though we try to apply the same outlooks and principals to our lives as humans, each one of us is unique by a different combination of features, traits, habits, customs, traditions, etc. Exploring the world is the best way to learn about life and understand the people. Learn to travel with an open mind and attitude of a learner. Expect to discover surprises and wisdom through experiences and interactions.

What is often neglected, however, is the equal importance of knowing one's own culture, values and beliefs in order to relate more effectively across cultural lines. Awareness of our own culture is important, because it can keep us from projecting our values onto others.

Last week was about cultural heritage found on the Island of Réunion. Different workshops showed me a variety of different cultural examples. First we discovered some of the island, its nature, its roughness and of course, its beauty. Because nature has its influence on cuture, we joined some cultural workshops. Weaving palmleafs, slavery museum, music making and a walk through La Plaine des Palmistes. This whole combination gave me a good impression about how culture could exist on an island like this. Like I already have written, the whole mixture of culture (e.g. European, African, Indian and even Chinese) shows me that real culture is able to evolve and change.

It was good!

Link to my Quizziz:
https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/5d3559c98754ac001ac55e68

I really enjoyed this course and the learning by doing approach. I have learned a lot about different forms of cultural heritage and in particular intangible culture. We have seen examples of local Reunion music, crafts, oral traditions and general traditions. The good thing about the course is that you practice using ICT tools to convey information or cultural heritage in my lessons in the future. I also learned a lot about social inclusion that I can use in the future at school. This course on Reunion is highly recommended!

During this course, we learned many different things, all centred around the main subject of the course: social inclusion. Social inclusion involves feeling accepted within your local community and being able to contribute to society in a meaningful way, through participation in mainstream activities and exercising basic rights. To apply this concept to an educational system is very important when you have a job as a teacher. To include many different individuals among different cultures to the educational system is an challenging but very beautiful goal as a teacher.

Through Rita’s program we had the opportunity to get familiar with different forms of cultural heritage by a learning by doing approach. Receiving insight in these different cultural aspects helps you to understand different cultures and how to include all of them. The different sessions we have done (as leaf weaving, hiking, listening to oral traditions etc.), really helped in providing you a better understanding of cultural heritage. I really do have an idea how to apply this knowledge in the future in the social culture in my classrooms to increase the level of social inclusion among the young individuals, since it’s important. This course is highly recommended.

https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/5d355c7db5c923001ac7ae2f

During this course we learned a lot about tradition and culture in Reunion.
What Creole is where it comes from.
Creole is a mix of French, Indian and African culture and language. It was nice to see how it evolved all cultures into a culture that runs through the years.
The most that impressed me is slavery, it was very interesting for me to know what slavery means here on island.

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.
-- Benjamin Franklin

During the course last week we have been able to discover many different sides of Reunion. All important parts of the culture and its origins have been reviewed: nature, music, traditions and history.

The strong point of the course is the social inclusion of the local population. By hearing the stories, seeing the traditions and learning the crafts from the locals, you are really involved and you learn through experience. That is the most important thing for me personally: reading and acquiring knowledge is possible for everyone, but you don't get the feeling like when you learn and do according to the ways of the locals. Social inclusion makes the learning so much more effective!
