When I went to Vesuvius during a summer vacation, I learnt that Spartacus's soldiers camped at the top of the volcano (before, there wasn't a crater in the middle of the volcano. It was more like a plateau). However, many know of the tragedy of Pompeii. Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. and killed the entire settlement of Pompeii and effected most of Herculaneum. The people of Pompeii's corpses were solidified and masked in a strong, smoky material from the Volcano's unusual eruption.
